Beets thrive in our Mid-Atlantic climate, giving you both tender roots and nutritious greens from a single planting. Our humid summers and variable spring weather can challenge some crops, but beets are remarkably forgiving once you get the timing right. Transplanting Outdoors
While beets can be transplanted in mid-March through early April, this isn't the recommended approach for our region. Beets develop a taproot that doesn't appreciate disturbance, and transplant shock often leads to stunted, woody roots that never reach their full potential.
If you do choose to transplant seedlings you've started indoors, harden them off gradually over a full week. Our variable spring weather means a warm day can quickly turn cold, so give plants time to adjust to the temperature swings. Space transplants 3-4 inches apart and plant them when soil temperatures reach at least 45Β°F.
The transplanting window is narrow in the Mid-Atlantic because you want to get them in before our warm spells trick them into bolting, but after the risk of hard frost passes. Most experienced gardeners skip transplanting altogether and direct sow for better results.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the best method for beets in our Mid-Atlantic gardens. You can start sowing in late March when soil temperatures reach 45Β°F and continue succession plantings through mid-August. This gives you a steady harvest from late spring through the first hard frost in late October.
Prepare your planting bed by working compost into our heavy clay soil - beets need good drainage but appreciate the consistent moisture clay provides. Plant seeds Β½ inch deep and space them 3-4 inches apart. Each beet "seed" is actually a cluster, so you'll need to thin seedlings to prevent crowding.
Our humid springs can delay germination if soil stays too wet, so plant on raised beds or mounds if drainage is poor. Seeds typically germinate in 7-14 days when soil temperatures are consistently above 50Β°F. For continuous harvest, sow new rows every 2-3 weeks through mid-August - any later and they won't mature before frost.

Beets need consistent moisture throughout their growing season, which works perfectly with our Mid-Atlantic climate's reliable 40-50 inches of annual rainfall.
