Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting cantaloupe seeds indoors isn't the primary method, but it can give you a head start if you want earlier harvests or are growing specialty varieties. Start seeds early to late April, about 3 weeks before your planned transplant date. Use biodegradable pots since melons hate root disturbance—you'll plant the entire pot.
Keep seed trays warm (75-80°F) and use bottom watering to prevent damping off. A heating mat helps with germination in our moderate spring temperatures. Once seedlings emerge, provide bright light and gradually reduce warmth to prevent legginess.
The main advantage of indoor starting in our Mid-Atlantic climate is getting around our unpredictable spring weather, but direct sowing usually works just as well and avoids transplant shock.

Watering Cantaloupe in Zone 6A (Mid-Atlantic)
Cantaloupe needs consistent, deep watering throughout the growing season, but our Mid-Atlantic rainfall patterns require a strategic approach. During our humid summers with average rainfall of 40-50 inches, you'll often get natural irrigation, but dry spells still happen. Use the finger test—if soil is dry 2 inches deep, it's time to water.
