Chamomile is a fantastic addition to any Mid-Atlantic garden. Its delicate, apple-like flavor makes for a soothing tea, and its cheerful flowers attract beneficial insects. Plus, the satisfaction of growing your own herbs in our four distinct seasons is hard to beat.
While our humid summers and occasional deer pressure can present challenges, Chamomile is surprisingly resilient. With a growing season that stretches over 200 days, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy this delightful herb.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Chamomile indoors in the Mid-Atlantic isn't strictly necessary, but it can give you a head start. If you're eager for an early harvest, sow seeds indoors from late January through mid February, about six weeks before the last expected frost.
Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix. Keep them warm and provide plenty of light, either from a sunny windowsill or a grow light. Bottom watering helps prevent damping-off, a common issue with seedlings, especially with our moderate spring.
Transplanting Outdoors
Once the danger of hard frost has passed, usually from mid March through mid April, you can transplant your Chamomile seedlings outdoors. Before planting, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week.
Space the plants 6-8 inches apart in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Keep an eye on the weather forecast; we sometimes get unexpected cold snaps this time of year, so be ready to cover your seedlings if needed.
