Overview
Growing corn in the Great Plains feels like a natural partnership between plant and place. Our fertile prairie soil and intense summer sunshine create ideal conditions for these towering stalks, and there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of harvesting sweet, milky kernels that taste worlds better than anything from the store. The traditional Three Sisters planting of corn, beans, and squash originated right here on the Great Plains for good reason.
With our 149-day growing season and those famous temperature swings, timing your corn planting takes some attention to detail. But once you get the timing right and provide adequate water during our hot, dry summers, corn rewards Plains gardeners with impressive yields that make the most of our region's natural advantages.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplanting corn isn't the recommended method since corn develops a deep taproot quickly and doesn't handle root disturbance well. However, if you're starting with transplants, plan to move them outdoors between mid-May through mid-June, once soil temperatures consistently reach 60Β°F and nighttime lows stay above 50Β°F.
Harden off transplants gradually over a full week, starting with just 2-3 hours of morning sun and building up to full exposure. Our Plains winds can shock tender transplants, so choose calm days for the transition. Space transplants 8-12 inches apart in blocks rather than single rows to ensure good pollination.
Be prepared to protect young transplants from late cold snaps and wind. Even a brief temperature drop below 50Β°F can stunt growth significantly, and our ever-present wind can snap young stalks or dry them out quickly.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is absolutely the way to go with corn in our region. Plant seeds between mid-May through early July, waiting until soil temperature reaches at least 60Β°F at planting depth. Cold, wet soil causes seeds to rot before germinating, and corn planted too early often struggles all season long.
Prepare your planting area by working compost into our prairie soil, which corn loves but benefits from extra organic matter for moisture retention. Plant seeds 1-2 inches deep and 8-12 inches apart in blocks of at least four rows rather than single rows. Corn demands consistent moisture throughout the growing season, making it one of the more water-intensive crops for Plains gardeners. Our low-to-moderate humidity means water evaporates quickly, so morning watering at the base of plants works best to minimize waste.
The most critical watering period is during silking and ear development, typically occurring in mid-to-late summer when our temperatures often hit that 93Β°F mark. Even a few days of drought stress during pollination can result in ears with missing kernels or poor kernel development. Harvest Time
Your first corn harvest typically arrives between late July through early October, about 75 days after planting. The timing depends on when you planted and which variety you chose, but most gardeners see their main harvest during the peak heat of August when our summer sunshine has done its work.
Check for ripeness by watching the silks β they'll turn brown and dry when ears are ready. Pull back a small section of husk and press a kernel with your thumbnail. Ripe corn releases a milky white juice, while immature kernels are watery and mature kernels are doughy. The kernels should be plump and arranged in tight, even rows.
Harvest by gripping the ear firmly and twisting downward with a quick snap. Pick corn in the early morning when sugar content is highest, ideally just before cooking since sugars convert to starch quickly once harvested. Unlike tomatoes or peppers, corn doesn't continue ripening once picked, so timing is everything.
As our first frost approaches in early October, harvest any remaining ears even if they're slightly immature. Green husks can finish maturing if you leave the ears attached to cut stalks and hang them in a dry, ventilated area. Common Problems in Zone 4B (Great Plains)
Corn Earworm Small holes in kernels at the tip of ears, often with dark brown frass (insect droppings) visible. The damage appears as chewed kernels and silk, making ears unmarketable even if most kernels remain intact.
This pest thrives in our hot Plains summers and can have multiple generations per season. The adult moths lay eggs on fresh silks, and the larvae tunnel into developing ears. Prevent damage by applying a few drops of mineral oil to the silk channel once silks begin to brown, or plant varieties with tight husks that make entry difficult.
Raccoons Entire ears stripped from stalks overnight, often with stalks knocked down and husks scattered around the garden. Raccoons have an uncanny ability to harvest corn just one night before you planned to pick it yourself, and they're particularly troublesome in areas near water sources or wooded shelter.
Our Plains agricultural landscape provides plenty of raccoon habitat, and they're attracted to the sweet smell of ripening corn. Install electric fencing around the corn patch, or try playing talk radio overnight to deter them. Some gardeners have success with row covers secured tightly until ears are nearly mature.
Poor Pollination Ears develop with missing kernels, creating gaps along the cob, or ears fail to develop at all despite healthy-looking plants. You might see plenty of tassels and silks, but the timing doesn't align properly, or wind blows pollen away before it reaches the silks.
