🪴 Transplanting Outdoors

While corn can technically be transplanted, it's rarely the best choice in the Mountain West. Corn develops a deep taproot quickly and doesn't appreciate root disturbance, which makes transplanting risky even under ideal conditions. If you do choose to transplant seedlings started indoors, plan for mid-May through mid-June when soil has warmed consistently.

Harden off transplants gradually over a full week, starting with just 2-3 hours of morning sun and building up to full exposure. Our intense UV can shock tender seedlings, so increase outdoor time slowly. Space plants 8-12 inches apart in blocks rather than single rows for better pollination.

Watch for late cold snaps that can still hit the Mountain West into mid-May. Even a brief dip below 50°F can set back young corn plants significantly, so keep row covers handy for unexpected temperature drops.

🌾 Direct Sowing

Direct sowing is absolutely the way to go with corn in our Mountain climate. Plant from early May through early July, but wait until soil temperature reaches at least 60°F consistently—cold, wet soil will cause seeds to rot before they germinate. Ripe corn releases a milky juice, while underripe corn produces clear liquid. The kernels should feel plump and tender, not dented or tough.

Harvest in early morning when sugar content is highest, twisting ears downward with a quick snap.
