Peas are one of the most rewarding cool-season crops you can grow in our Mid-Atlantic climate, offering that sweet, crisp flavor that store-bought versions simply can't match. Our Zone 7A location gives you an incredibly long growing window β from late winter plantings that mature in spring to late summer sowings for fall harvests β making the most of our generous 208-day growing season.
While our humid summers and variable spring weather can challenge some crops, peas actually thrive in our moderate temperatures and reliable rainfall. The key is timing your plantings to work with our climate patterns rather than against them, letting these hardy legumes do what they do best in our four distinct seasons.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplanting peas isn't the preferred method since they don't handle root disturbance well, but if you've started them indoors, you can move them outside from early March through early April. Give them a full week of hardening off, gradually increasing their outdoor exposure as our spring weather can swing from warm to surprisingly cold.
Space your transplants 2-4 inches apart and plant them on a calm, overcast day if possible β our March winds can be harsh on tender seedlings. Watch for those late cold snaps that can surprise us in early April, and have row covers ready if temperatures threaten to drop below freezing.
Direct Sowing

Plant seeds 2-4 inches apart and about 1-2 inches deep in loose, well-draining soil. If you're dealing with our typical clay soil, work in some compost to improve drainage and make it easier for seeds to push through. For continuous harvests, sow new rows every 2-3 weeks through spring, then resume plantings in mid to late summer for fall crops that will thrive in our cooling September and October weather.
Watering Peas in Zone 7A (Mid-Atlantic)
Peas need consistent moisture but not soggy conditions, which works well with our Mid-Atlantic rainfall patterns. During our typical spring weather, natural rainfall often provides most of what they need, but check soil moisture by sticking your finger 2 inches down β if it's dry, it's time to water.
Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Water at the base of plants rather than overhead to reduce disease issues in our humid climate β powdery mildew loves our warm days and cool nights, and wet foliage makes it worse. Our summer humidity means the soil stays moist longer than in drier climates, so don't overwater.
Watch for signs of stress during flowering and pod development, which is when peas need the most consistent moisture. Wilted leaves in the morning or pods that stop filling properly indicate drought stress. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch helps maintain even soil moisture and keeps roots cool during our warmer summer stretches.
Signs of overwatering include yellowing leaves and poor pod set β our clay soils can hold too much water if you're not careful. In our humid summers, morning watering gives plants time to dry before evening, reducing fungal problems.
Supporting Your Peas
Even dwarf pea varieties benefit from some kind of support in our region, where spring winds can knock over unsupported plants. Install trellises, stakes with string, or pea brush (twiggy branches) at planting time β trying to add support later damages the shallow roots.
For bush types, a simple 3-4 foot fence or trellis works perfectly. Tall climbing varieties need 6-8 feet of support and will quickly fill a vertical space, making excellent use of garden real estate. The tendrils grab onto almost anything, but they prefer thin supports like string or wire mesh over smooth poles.
Train young plants by gently weaving them through the support structure when they're about 6 inches tall. Once they start climbing, they'll mostly take care of themselves, though you might need to redirect wayward shoots during our gusty spring weather.

Harvest Time
Your first spring-planted peas will be ready from late April through May, about 60 days from sowing. Harvest in the morning when pods are crisp and full of moisture. Use both hands: hold the vine with one and gently pull the pod with the other to avoid damaging the plant. Check plants daily during peak season β peas can go from perfect to overripe in just a day or two in warm weather.
Keep harvesting regularly to encourage continued production. Pods left too long on the vine become tough and starchy, and the plant stops producing new flowers. For snow peas and snap peas, pick them when pods are still flat and tender.
As our first frost approaches in late October, harvest all remaining pods regardless of size. Green pods can be used in stir-fries, and any mature peas can be dried for winter storage or next year's seed.
Common Problems in Zone 7A (Mid-Atlantic)
Powdery Mildew White or gray dusty coating appears on leaves, stems, and pods, starting as small spots that spread quickly. Leaves curl, yellow, and eventually die back. This fungal disease thrives in our Mid-Atlantic combination of warm days, cool nights, and moderate humidity β exactly what we get in late spring and early fall.
Improve air circulation by proper spacing and removing lower leaves that touch the soil. Spray with neem oil or a baking soda solution (1 tablespoon per gallon of water) at first sign of infection. Surprisingly, a milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) works well for prevention and early treatment.
Pea Aphids Small green insects cluster on stems, leaves, and pods, causing yellowing and stunted growth. These pests love our cool, moist spring conditions and can multiply rapidly. You'll see sticky honeydew on leaves and sometimes sooty mold growing on the honeydew.
Spray them off with a strong stream of water in the morning, or use insecticidal soap for heavier infestations. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs by avoiding broad-spectrum pesticides. Row covers during early growth can prevent initial infestations.
Root Rot Plants yellow from the bottom up, growth slows, and roots appear brown or black. This fungal problem is common in our clay soils that hold too much moisture, especially during cool, wet springs. Poor drainage combined with our high humidity creates perfect conditions for root rot fungi.
Improve soil drainage by adding compost and avoid overwatering. Plant in raised beds if drainage is consistently poor. Remove affected plants immediately to prevent spread, and don't plant peas in the same spot for 2-3 years.
