Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting pumpkin seeds indoors makes sense when you want a head start on the season or need to work around our unpredictable spring weather. Start seeds late April through mid-May, about three weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. This timing helps you skip the worst of our spring temperature swings.
Use seed trays filled with quality potting mix and keep them warm (75-80Β°F works well). Bottom watering prevents damping-off issues that can plague large seeds like pumpkins. Transplanting Outdoors

Harvest Time
Expect your first pumpkins late August through late September, depending on variety and when you planted. With our typical late September frost, timing becomes crucial β monitor weather forecasts closely as harvest season approaches. Most varieties need the full 100 days to develop proper flavor and storage quality.
Look for full color development, a hard shell that resists fingernail pressure, and a hollow sound when you tap the pumpkin. The stem should be turning dry and corky rather than green and fleshy. Most importantly, the ground spot (where the pumpkin touches soil) should be deep orange or tan, not pale or white.
Cut pumpkins from the vine with sharp pruners, leaving a 4-inch stem handle β this "handle" helps prevent rot during storage. Harvest before hard frost since pumpkins won't continue ripening once frozen. Handle carefully to avoid bruises that can lead to storage problems.
If frost threatens before pumpkins are fully mature, harvest them anyway and use within a few weeks rather than for long-term storage. A light frost won't immediately damage pumpkins still on the vine, but anything below 28Β°F will end the season abruptly.

Squash Vine Borers
You'll notice entire vines or sections suddenly wilting despite adequate water, often accompanied by sawdust-like frass at the base of stems. Powdery Mildew
White or grayish powdery coating appears on leaves, starting on older foliage and spreading upward. Leaves eventually curl, yellow, and die back, reducing the plant's ability to fuel fruit development. Ironically, our relatively dry climate can actually favor powdery mildew since it thrives on dry leaf surfaces with moderate humidity β different from most fungal diseases.
Improve air circulation through proper spacing and pruning excess foliage. Remove affected leaves immediately and dispose of them away from the garden. Spray weekly with neem oil or try the surprisingly effective milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water). Plant varieties with resistance to powdery mildew when possible.
