The Mid-Atlantic's variable spring weather and humid summers do present some challenges for squash growers, but proper timing makes all the difference. Our moderate spring start means you won't rush into planting too early, and while humidity can encourage fungal issues, good spacing and variety selection keep most problems manageable.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting squash seeds indoors isn't the preferred method here, but it makes sense if you want to get a jump on the season or if you're growing long-season winter varieties. You can start seeds indoors from late March through mid-April, about 3 weeks before your planned transplant date. This gives you more control over germination conditions during our sometimes unpredictable spring weather.
Set up your seed trays in a warm spot (70-80Β°F soil temperature works best) with good light once they germinate. Use bottom watering to keep the soil consistently moist without waterlogging the seeds. Squash seeds are large enough to handle easily and typically germinate within 5-7 days under the right conditions.
The main advantage of indoor starting in our region is timing flexibility β you can have sturdy transplants ready regardless of whether we get a late cold snap or an unusually warm spell in April.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your indoor-started squash seedlings from late April through late May, after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures consistently reach 60Β°F. In our Mid-Atlantic springs, soil temperature often lags behind air temperature, so don't rush this step even if the weather feels warm.
Harden off your seedlings for a full week before transplanting β gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for longer periods each day. Our variable spring weather makes this hardening process especially important. Space transplants 48-72 inches apart, as these vines will spread considerably once they hit their stride in summer heat.
Watch the long-range forecast before transplanting. While we typically avoid frost after mid-April, those occasional late cold snaps can devastate tender squash plants. Have row covers ready if temperatures threaten to dip below 50Β°F during the first two weeks after transplanting.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the recommended method for growing squash in our region β these vigorous plants establish quickly from seed and often outperform transplants. You can direct sow from mid-April through mid-July, giving you flexibility for succession planting and different harvest windows.
Wait until soil temperature reaches at least 60Β°F before sowing. In our clay-heavy Mid-Atlantic soils, work in some compost or aged manure to improve drainage and warm-up time. Plant seeds 1 inch deep in groups of 2-3, spacing these groups 48-72 inches apart. Once seedlings emerge, thin to the strongest plant in each group.
Summer squash grows remarkably fast from directly-sown seeds in our climate. Seeds planted in late May will often catch up to earlier transplants by mid-summer. For continuous harvests, try sowing new hills every 2-3 weeks through early July β this strategy also helps you avoid the worst of squash vine borer pressure.
Watering Squash in Zone 6B (Mid-Atlantic)
Squash needs consistent moisture throughout the growing season, but our Mid-Atlantic climate requires a nuanced approach to watering. With 40-50 inches of annual rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year, you'll need to supplement natural precipitation during dry spells while avoiding overwatering during our typically humid summers.
Deep, infrequent watering works best β aim for 1-1.5 inches per week including rainfall. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2 inches deep near the plant base. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water. During our humid summers with warm nights, avoid overhead watering late in the day, which can encourage fungal diseases. Instead, water at the base of plants early morning.
Watch for signs of both under and overwatering. Underwatered plants show wilting during hot afternoons (even with adequate soil moisture), while overwatered plants develop yellowing leaves and poor fruit set. In our heavy clay soils, overwatering is often the bigger problem than drought stress.

Harvest Time
Your first squash harvest typically begins from mid-July through late October, depending on when you planted and which varieties you're growing. Summer squash like zucchini and yellow crookneck will be ready about 50-60 days from planting, while winter varieties need the full 85+ days to develop their hard shells.
For summer squash, harvest when fruits are 6-8 inches long and the skin still yields to light fingernail pressure. Check plants daily during peak season β these varieties produce prolifically in our warm, humid summers. For winter squash, wait until the shell is completely hard and resists denting with your fingernail. The stem should be dry and corky, and the ground spot (where the fruit touches soil) should be cream or orange, not white or green.
Always cut rather than pull squash from the vine, leaving a 2-inch stem attached. This stem acts as a cork, preventing rot from entering the fruit. Use sharp, clean pruning shears to avoid damaging the vine, which can continue producing until frost.
As our first frost approaches in late October, harvest all remaining winter squash regardless of full maturity β they won't continue ripening once frozen. Slightly immature winter squash won't store as long but can still be used fresh. Cover summer squash plants on nights when frost threatens to extend your harvest by several weeks.
Common Problems in Zone 6B (Mid-Atlantic)
Squash Vine Borers You'll notice sudden wilting of entire vines or sections, often appearing overnight despite adequate soil moisture. Look for small piles of sawdust-like frass at the base of stems β this is your telltale sign. If you slit open the affected stem, you'll find fat white grubs tunneling through the vine's interior. In our Mid-Atlantic climate, adult moths typically emerge in late June through July, laying eggs at the base of squash stems. The larvae bore into stems, cutting off the plant's water and nutrient flow. Wrap the base of stems with aluminum foil or use row covers during egg-laying season. If you catch an infestation early, you can inject Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) directly into the stem. Plant butternut squash varieties, which show more resistance than summer types.
Powdery Mildew This fungal disease appears as white or grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. Leaves eventually curl, yellow, and die, reducing overall plant vigor. Our Mid-Atlantic climate of warm days, cool nights, and humid conditions creates perfect conditions for powdery mildew. Ironically, this fungus thrives on dry leaf surfaces rather than wet ones, unlike most plant diseases. Improve air circulation by proper spacing (don't crowd plants) and removing lower leaves that touch the ground. Spray with neem oil or potassium bicarbonate, or try the surprisingly effective milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water). Plant resistant varieties when possible.
Squash Bugs These gray-brown, shield-shaped insects cluster on leaf undersides, especially on older plants later in the season. You'll see bronze-colored egg clusters laid in neat rows on leaves, and affected leaves develop wilting that progresses to brown, crispy patches. These sap-sucking pests inject toxins while feeding, and adults overwinter in garden debris before emerging in spring. Hand-pick adults in early morning when they're sluggish, and crush any egg clusters you find.
