Starting yellow squash indoors is an option, but honestly, it's not usually necessary in our Mid-Atlantic climate. The seeds germinate so quickly and easily in warm soil that direct sowing is almost always the better choice. However, if you're eager to get a jump start, or if we're having a particularly cool spring, you can start seeds indoors from late March through mid April, about three weeks before you plan to transplant.
Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good seed-starting mix. Keep them warm (around 70-75Β°F) and provide plenty of light, either from a sunny window or a grow light. Water gently from the bottom to avoid damping off. This involves setting the tray in a shallow dish of water and letting the soil absorb it. The moderate spring weather we often experience in the Mid-Atlantic makes indoor starting less critical, but itβs a good backup plan.
Transplanting Outdoors
If you started your yellow squash indoors, you can transplant them outdoors from late April through early June. Before transplanting, itβs crucial to harden them off. This means gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. Start with an hour or two of shade, and slowly increase the amount of sun and wind they receive each day.
