Plant transplants after your last hard frost but watch for those sneaky late-season cold snaps that can hit even in late May. Have row covers ready β a surprise freeze can wipe out an entire planting overnight.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is absolutely the way to go with green beans in our Mountain climate. Plant from early May through late July, timing your first planting for when soil temperature reaches 60Β°F consistently. In most Mountain areas, this means waiting until mid to late May for your first sowing, despite the temptation to plant earlier during warm spells.
Prepare your planting area by working compost into the soil β beans fix their own nitrogen but appreciate loose, well-draining soil. Our alkaline soils can be challenging, so adding organic matter helps both drainage and pH balance. Plant seeds 1-1.5 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows.

Watering Green Beans in Zone 6B (Mountain West)
Green beans need consistent moisture but not soggy conditions β perfect for our dry Mountain climate where overwatering is more common than drought stress. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, including any natural rainfall. With our typical 10-20 inches of annual precipitation, you'll need to irrigate regularly through the growing season.
Always water at soil level rather than overhead. Our low humidity means wet foliage stays damp longer than you'd expect, creating perfect conditions for fungal diseases like rust. Use drip irrigation, soaker hoses, or simply water around the base of plants with a watering can or hose.
Check soil moisture using the finger test β stick your finger 2 inches into the soil near the plants. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water. In our intense summer sun and low humidity, this might mean watering every 2-3 days during peak growing season.
Watch for signs of stress: wilting during the heat of the day (even with adequate soil moisture) is normal, but wilting in morning or evening indicates drought stress.
