Freshly harvested sprouts are sweeter and more tender than anything you'll find at the grocery store, and they're incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Plus, the plants themselves are quite striking in the garden, adding a touch of vertical interest as the season winds down.
While we might not have the long, scorching summers of other regions, our mild summers and long, cool fall provide the perfect conditions for Brussels sprouts to thrive. With a little planning, you can easily work around our cool spring soil and ensure a bountiful harvest within our 183-day growing season.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting your Brussels sprouts indoors gives them a head start, which is crucial given their long growing season. Aim to sow your seeds indoors from early to late March, roughly six weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. This helps you sidestep our often-overcast spring days and cool soil temperatures.
Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good quality seed starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Bottom watering is a great way to ensure even moisture without disturbing the delicate seedlings. Place the trays in a warm location and provide supplemental light, such as a grow light, to encourage strong, healthy growth.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Brussels sprouts seedlings outdoors from mid April through mid May, once the danger of hard frost has passed. Before transplanting, be sure to harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the sunlight, wind, and temperature fluctuations.
Space your plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for ample air circulation and growth. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as we can still get some chilly nights and even the occasional late frost during this period. If frost threatens, cover your young plants with row covers or blankets.

Brussels sprouts need consistent moisture to develop those tight, delicious sprouts we all crave. In our dry-summer climate, this means paying close attention to watering, especially during the warmer months. In general, aim for about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
The best way to determine if your plants need water is to use the "finger test." Stick your finger into the soil about 2 inches deep. If the soil feels dry to the touch, it's time to water. Water deeply at the base of the plants, avoiding overhead watering as much as possible to minimize the risk of fungal diseases.
During our dry summer months, you'll likely need to water more frequently, perhaps every 2-3 days. Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and loose, poorly formed sprouts. Overwatering, on the other hand, can lead to root rot and yellowing leaves. Mulching around your plants with straw or compost will help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Supporting Your Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts can grow quite tall and become top-heavy, especially when loaded with sprouts. Our often-windy conditions can make this even more problematic. Staking provides the support they need to stay upright and prevent breakage.
Bamboo stakes or sturdy garden stakes work well. Install the stakes when the plants are about 2 feet tall, gently tying the main stem to the stake with soft twine or plant ties. As the plants grow taller, you may need to add additional ties for support.
Pruning & Maintaining Brussels Sprouts
Pruning Brussels sprouts is fairly minimal, but it can help improve air circulation and direct energy to sprout development. As the sprouts begin to form along the stem, remove the yellowing or damaged lower leaves. This allows for better airflow and reduces the risk of disease.
About 3-4 weeks before you plan to harvest, top the plant by cutting off the growing tip. This encourages the plant to focus its energy on maturing the existing sprouts rather than producing new growth. As our first frost approaches around mid- October, remove any remaining small sprouts that are unlikely to mature.

Harvest Time
You can expect your first harvest of Brussels sprouts from mid July through late August, about 90 days after planting. The sprouts are ready to harvest when they are firm, tight, and about 1-2 inches in diameter. Start harvesting from the bottom of the plant, working your way upwards.
To harvest, simply twist or snap off the sprouts from the stem. Don't be afraid to tug a little; they should detach fairly easily. Brussels sprouts actually taste even better after a light frost, as the cold temperatures convert starches to sugars, resulting in a sweeter flavor.
Continue harvesting sprouts as they mature throughout the fall. Even after the first few frosts, the plants will continue to produce. As the end of the season approaches, harvest any remaining sprouts before a hard freeze.

Aphids
- What it looks like: Clusters of tiny soft-bodied insects (green, black, or white) on stems and leaf undersides. Sticky honeydew residue. Curled or distorted new growth.
- What causes it: Rapid-reproducing sap-sucking insects. Populations explode in warm weather. Ant colonies may farm them for honeydew.
- How to fix/prevent it: Strong water spray knocks them off. Encourage ladybugs and lacewings (natural predators). Insecticidal soap for heavy infestations. Neem oil works systemically. Avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer (it attracts them).
Cabbage Worms
- What it looks like: Smooth green caterpillars on brassica leaves. Irregular holes chewed in leaves. Dark green droppings. White butterflies hovering around plants.

- How to fix/prevent it: Provide consistent moisture, especially during hot spells. Mulch around the plants to keep the soil cool. Plant varieties that are more heat-tolerant.
Clubroot
- What it looks like: Stunted growth, wilting in afternoon heat, yellowing leaves. Roots are swollen, distorted, and club-shaped when dug up.
- What causes it: Soil-borne pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) that persists in soil for 10+ years. Favors acidic, wet soil.
- How to fix/prevent it: Raise soil pH to 7.0-7.2 with lime. Improve drainage. Rotate brassicas on a 7-year cycle. Remove and destroy infected plants (don't compost). Start transplants in sterile mix.
