Fresh corn picked at peak ripeness delivers a sweetness that store-bought varieties simply can't match—and in our mild Pacific Northwest summers, you can grow tender varieties that would struggle in hotter climates. Our cool nights help preserve those sugars, while the extended dry season means you control exactly when and how much water your corn receives during those critical ear-filling stages.
Growing corn here does require some planning around our unique climate patterns. Our cool spring soils can delay germination, and corn needs consistent warmth to thrive in our relatively short growing season. But with 162 frost-free days between early May and early October, you have plenty of time to grow even full-season varieties if you time your planting right.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplanting corn outdoors works best from mid-May through mid-June, once our notorious spring soil chill has finally warmed up. However, corn develops a deep taproot quickly and doesn't appreciate root disturbance, so direct sowing usually gives better results in our region.
If you do choose to transplant, harden off your seedlings gradually over a week before planting out. Space plants 8-12 inches apart in blocks rather than single rows—this improves pollination, which can be challenging during our overcast spring days when bee activity is lower.
Watch for late cold snaps during transplant season, especially in early to mid-May. Even a brief dip below 50°F can stunt growth significantly, so having row covers ready is wise during those first few weeks outdoors.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing gives the best results with corn in our Pacific Northwest climate. Plant from early May through mid-July, but wait until soil temperature reaches at least 60°F—cold, wet spring soil will cause seeds to rot before they germinate. Our clay-heavy soils warm slowly, so early May plantings often work better than you'd expect.
Plant seeds 1-2 inches deep and 8-12 inches apart in blocks of at least four rows. Corn is wind-pollinated, so clustering plants together dramatically improves kernel development. In our mild summers, you can succession plant every two weeks through mid-July for extended harvests.
Work compost into the planting area beforehand since corn is a heavy feeder. The fast drainage our summer dry spells create means you'll want good organic matter to help retain moisture during those critical silking and ear-filling stages.
Watering Corn in Zone 6B (Pacific Northwest)
Corn has high water needs and absolutely cannot tolerate drought, especially during pollination and ear development. Missing kernels on your cobs almost always traces back to water stress during the silking stage. In our dry-summer climate, you'll need to provide all moisture once our spring rains end in late May or June.
Plan to give corn about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, delivered deeply but infrequently. Check soil moisture by pushing your finger 2 inches down—if it's dry at that depth, it's time to water. Our low summer humidity means you can water overhead without disease concerns, but watering at the base is more efficient and reduces waste.
During our typical dry stretches from July through September, established corn may need water twice weekly. Watch for leaf edges curling or plants looking wilted in the morning—both signal serious water stress. The silks should stay moist and plump during pollination; dried, brown silks before ears fill indicate insufficient water.
A 2-3 inch layer of straw mulch helps retain moisture during our rainless summer months while keeping those shallow feeder roots cool. This is especially valuable during August heat waves when temperatures occasionally push above 85°F.

Harvest Time
Your first corn ears will be ready from late July through early October, typically about 75 days after planting. In our mild climate, you often get a longer harvest window than hotter regions since the sugars don't convert to starch as quickly during our cool nights.
Check for ripeness by looking for brown, dried silks and plump ears that feel full when you squeeze them gently. Pull back just a small section of husk to peek at the kernels—they should be plump and milky when punctured with a fingernail. The kernels will progress from clear to milky to doughy, and you want them right in that sweet milky stage.
Harvest by twisting and pulling ears downward with a quick motion. Pick in the early morning when sugar content is highest, especially during our warm August afternoons. Each stalk typically produces 1-2 good ears.
As early October approaches and our first frost threatens, harvest any remaining ears even if they're not quite perfect. Green husks will continue ripening for a few days if brought indoors, though the flavor won't be as sweet as properly vine-ripened corn.
Common Problems in Zone 6B (Pacific Northwest)
Corn Earworm Small holes in husks with brown frass (insect droppings) around the silk end indicate corn earworm damage. You'll find fat, striped caterpillars feeding inside the ears, usually starting at the tip. These pests are less common in our cool climate than in warmer regions, but they do appear during warm August weather. Apply mineral oil to the silk channel after pollination is complete, or use Bt spray targeted at the silk area every few days during ear development.
Raccoons Flattened stalks and partially eaten ears with distinctive hand-like prints in soft soil signal raccoon raids. These clever animals seem to know exactly when corn reaches perfect ripeness, often harvesting just one night before you planned to. Electric fencing works best, or try harvesting ears slightly early and letting them finish ripening indoors. Some gardeners have success with radios playing talk shows all night—the human voices apparently make raccoons nervous.
Poor Pollination Ears with missing kernels, small size, or uneven kernel development usually indicate pollination problems. Our overcast spring weather can reduce bee activity right when corn tassels are shedding pollen. Plant in blocks rather than single rows to improve wind pollination, and consider hand-pollinating by collecting pollen from tassels in a paper bag and dusting it onto silks during mid-morning on calm days.
