Transplanting Outdoors

Watering Corn in Zone 7B (Mid-Atlantic)
Corn has extremely high water needs, especially during the critical silking and ear development period from mid-July through August in our Mid-Atlantic climate. Check for ripeness by looking for brown, dried silks and plump kernels that squirt milky juice when punctured with your fingernail. The husks should be bright green and tightly wrapped. Pull back a small section of husk to check kernel color - they should be plump and pale yellow (or the color of your variety).
Harvest ears by twisting and pulling downward with a quick snap. Pick in the early morning when sugars are highest, and get corn into your kitchen immediately - those sugars start converting to starch within hours. Each stalk typically produces 1-2 ears, so harvest what you need rather than trying to store ears on the plant.
As our first frost approaches in early November, harvest all remaining ears regardless of maturity. Immature ears won't ripen further, but they're still good for soups or can be cut off the cob and frozen.
