Transplanting Outdoors
While peas can be transplanted, it's not the recommended approach for our Pacific Northwest gardens. If you do choose to transplant seedlings you've started indoors, plan to move them outdoors from late March through mid-April, after hardening them off gradually over a week.
Space transplants 2-4 inches apart in your prepared beds. However, keep in mind that peas develop a long taproot and don't appreciate root disturbance, which makes them prone to transplant shock during our often-overcast spring days when growth is naturally slower.
The cooler soil temperatures we experience in early spring mean transplanted peas often don't establish much faster than direct-sown seeds, making direct sowing the more reliable method for consistent results.
Direct Sowing

Prepare your beds by working in some compost, but don't add nitrogen-rich fertilizers since peas fix their own nitrogen. Snow peas are ready when pods are flat but fully formed, while snap peas should have visible peas inside but still tender, edible pods.
Check your plants daily once harvest begins - peas can go from perfect to overripe quickly during our mild summer weather. Use both hands when harvesting: hold the vine with one hand while gently pulling pods with the other to avoid damaging the delicate plants. Morning harvest often gives you the sweetest, most tender peas.
