While our mild summers and cool nights might seem challenging for heat-loving peppers, starting them indoors early and choosing the right varieties lets you enjoy a bountiful harvest. With our roughly 162-day growing season, proper timing is key, but definitely achievable!
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting sweet pepper seeds indoors gives them a head start on our relatively short growing season. Aim to sow your seeds from mid-March through early April, about 8 weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. This timing allows for strong seedlings ready to take advantage of the warming soil.
Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy, and provide bottom watering so the soil doesn't get compacted. A heat mat can help speed up germination, and once the seedlings emerge, make sure they get plenty of light from a grow light or a sunny windowsill. Remember, spring can be slow to start here, so patience is important!
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your sweet pepper seedlings outdoors from mid-May through mid-June, once the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Before transplanting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the sun and wind.

- What causes it: Rapid-reproducing sap-sucking insects. Populations explode in warm weather. Ant colonies may farm them for honeydew.

Sunscald
