The key is working with our variable spring weather patterns and taking advantage of our extended growing window from late April through mid-October for continuous harvests.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting squash seeds indoors makes sense if you want to maximize your growing season or need transplants ready for specific garden bed rotations. Sow seeds in individual 4-inch pots during early to late April, about 3 weeks before your planned transplant date. Squash seeds germinate quickly in warm soil (70-80Β°F), so place seed trays on a heat mat or warm spot.
Use bottom watering to prevent damping-off disease, which our humid spring conditions can encourage. Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days, and seedlings grow rapidly once established. Keep seedlings in bright light or under grow lights for 12-14 hours daily.

Winter squash is ready when the shell resists denting with a fingernail and the stem has dried to a corky texture. The skin should have a matte finish rather than glossy appearance. Always leave a 2-inch stem attached when cutting from the vine to prevent rot during storage.
Harvest all winter squash before our first frost, which typically arrives in mid-October. If frost threatens before full maturity, harvest anyway and cure in a warm, dry location for 10-14 days. Properly cured winter squash will store through our cold months in a cool, dry basement or garage.
