Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting squash seeds indoors works as a backup plan rather than your primary method, especially useful if you want to get a jump start or if beetles destroyed your first direct-sown planting. Start seeds in late March through mid-April, about three weeks before you plan to transplant outside.
Set up seed trays with quality potting mix in a warm spot around 70-75°F. Squash seeds germinate quickly with consistent moisture—bottom watering works particularly well to prevent damping off in our humid spring conditions. Once seedlings emerge, they'll need bright light or grow lamps.
Keep in mind that squash seedlings grow rapidly and don't love root disturbance, so you'll need to transplant them fairly quickly. Our moderate spring temperatures mean indoor starts aren't critical—direct sowing usually catches up fast.
Transplanting Outdoors
If you started seeds indoors, transplant your squash seedlings outside from mid-April through mid-May, once soil has warmed consistently and nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F. Our spring weather can be unpredictable with temperature swings, so watch the forecast carefully.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a week, starting with just a few hours of morning sun and building up to full outdoor exposure. This prevents shock from our intense Southeast sun and fluctuating spring humidity.
Space transplants 4-6 feet apart each direction—these vines spread extensively and need room for good air circulation in our humid climate. Plant at the same depth they were growing in containers, and water them in well. Expect some transplant shock initially, but healthy seedlings recover quickly in warm soil.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is your best bet for squash success in the Southeast, and you have a generous window from mid-April through late July. Wait until soil temperature reaches at least 65°F consistently—use a soil thermometer rather than guessing based on air temperature.
Prepare planting areas by working compost into your clay soil to improve drainage, since squash needs well-draining ground despite liking consistent moisture. Plant seeds 1 inch deep in hills spaced 4-6 feet apart, dropping 3-4 seeds per hill. Once seedlings emerge and develop their first true leaves, thin to the strongest plant per hill.
Summer plantings (June-July) actually work well here since squash grows rapidly in heat and can mature before fall diseases peak. Just ensure you're counting backwards 85 days from your expected first frost in late October to time your last planting.
Watering Squash in Zone 6B (Southeast)
Squash needs consistent moisture but not soggy conditions—tricky in our wet-summer Southeast climate where we typically get 45-55 inches of rain annually. Deep watering once or twice weekly works better than frequent shallow watering, encouraging roots to grow down rather than staying near the surface.
Check soil moisture with the finger test, pushing down 2 inches near the plant base. If it's dry at that depth, water deeply at ground level rather than overhead. Overhead watering in our humid conditions promotes fungal diseases on leaves. Aim for about 1-2 inches of water per week total, including rainfall.
During our intense summer heat with highs around 92°F, squash may show some afternoon wilting even with adequate soil moisture—this is normal stress response. Morning watering allows plants to take up moisture before the day's heat hits. As squash begins to mature in late summer, gradually reduce watering to help shells harden properly.
Apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch around plants to retain soil moisture and reduce water needs, but keep mulch away from the stem base to prevent pest and disease issues in our humid conditions.

Harvest Time
Expect your first mature winter squash from early July through late October, depending on when you planted and which variety you're growing. Unlike summer squash, winter squash needs to stay on the vine until fully mature—the shell should be so hard that you can't dent it with a fingernail.
Look for other ripeness signs: the stem where it attaches to the squash dries out and turns corky, and the ground spot (where the squash sits) changes from white to cream or tan. The skin develops its full mature color and loses any glossy sheen. When harvesting, cut the stem with pruners leaving about 2 inches attached—don't pull or twist off.
Harvest all remaining squash before our first frost arrives in late October, even if some seem borderline mature. A hard frost will damage the skin and reduce storage life significantly. Slightly immature squash can still be used for cooking, just won't store as long.
Cure harvested squash in the sun for a week if possible, or in a warm, dry location, to further harden the skin for long-term storage. Properly cured squash stores for months in a cool, dry place.
Common Problems in Zone 6B (Southeast)
Squash Vine Borers You'll notice sudden wilting of entire vine sections seemingly overnight, often with sawdust-like frass around the stem base. If you slit open the affected stem, you'll find fat white grubs tunneling through, cutting off the plant's water flow. This clearwing moth lays eggs at stem bases in our warm Southeast summers, and the larvae are devastating.
Prevention works better than treatment: wrap aluminum foil around stem bases or use row covers early in the season. If you catch borers early, you can inject Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) directly into stems. Butternut squash shows more resistance than other types, and succession planting gives you backup plants when borers strike.
Powdery Mildew White or gray powdery coating appears on leaves, starting on older foliage and spreading upward. Leaves curl, yellow, and eventually die, weakening the whole plant. This fungal disease loves our Southeast conditions—warm days, cooler nights, and moderate humidity create perfect conditions even when leaf surfaces stay dry.
Improve air circulation by spacing plants properly and removing lower leaves that touch the ground. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays help control spread. Surprisingly, milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) proves effective against powdery mildew. Choose resistant varieties when possible.
Squash Bugs These gray-brown shield-shaped insects cluster on leaf undersides, especially along veins. You'll find bronze-colored egg clusters arranged in neat patterns on leaves. Affected leaves wilt, turn brown, and become crispy as bugs inject toxin while feeding. Adults overwinter in garden debris and emerge as our weather warms.
Hand-picking adults and crushing egg clusters works well for small plantings. Set out board traps—adults hide underneath boards at night, so flip them in the morning and destroy the bugs. Neem oil spray helps control nymphs. Clean up all plant debris in fall to eliminate overwintering sites.
