Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting thyme indoors makes sense if you want a head start or a specific variety that's hard to find locally. Begin your seeds indoors from late January through mid February, about eight weeks before you plan to transplant them outdoors. Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix, and provide consistent warmth and bright light.
Thyme seeds are tiny, so don't bury them too deep. Bottom watering your seedlings will help prevent damping off and keep the leaves dry, which is especially important in our humid climate. This method helps avoid fungal issues.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your thyme seedlings outdoors from early to late April, once the danger of a hard frost has passed. Before transplanting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the sunlight and temperature swings we often see in spring.
Plant your thyme seedlings 8-12 inches apart in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Thyme is slow to grow from seed, so many gardeners in the Mid-Atlantic find that buying established starter plants from a local nursery gives quicker results.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing thyme is definitely possible in our region, but it requires patience. Sow your seeds from early April through early August, ensuring the soil temperature is consistently around 70Β°F. Prepare the soil well, creating a fine seedbed, and keep it consistently moist until the seedlings emerge.
Thin the seedlings to 8-12 inches apart once they are large enough to handle. Direct sowing works best if you're not in a rush and want to let nature take its course.
Watering Thyme in Zone 7B (Mid-Atlantic)
Thyme is very drought-tolerant and actually prefers slightly dry conditions, which is good news for Mid-Atlantic gardeners dealing with our humid summers. Overwatering is a much bigger concern than underwatering, as it can quickly lead to root rot.
During the spring and fall, when temperatures are milder and rainfall is more frequent, you likely won't need to water your thyme at all. In the heat of summer, check the soil moisture by using the "finger test"βstick your finger about two inches deep into the soil. If it feels dry, give your thyme a good watering, about an inch per week. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage and encouraging fungal diseases in our humid climate.
