Overview
Celebrity Tomato is a solid choice for us Northeast gardeners. Its reliable flavor, perfect for slicing and sauces, and its manageable size make it a winner in our short season. Plus, its good disease resistance gives you a bit of a safety net, especially if you're just starting out.
We all know our growing season in the Northeast can be a bit of a nail-biter, with those late frosts in spring and the early ones threatening in September. But with Celebrity's relatively short 70-day maturity, we can absolutely squeeze in a harvest during our 128 days, especially if we get a head start indoors.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Start your Celebrity Tomato seeds indoors from early April through early May. This gives you about six weeks to get them strong and ready for transplanting after the last frost. It feels like forever waiting for the ground to warm up here in the Northeast!
Use seed trays or small pots and a good seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist, and provide warmth β a heat mat underneath can really speed things up. Don't forget the light! A grow light is ideal, but a sunny south-facing window can work if you turn the seedlings regularly to prevent them from getting leggy. Bottom watering can help prevent damping off.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Celebrity Tomato seedlings outdoors from late May through late June, once the danger of frost has passed. Don't rush it β that's a mistake we all make in the Northeast, eager to get going!
Before planting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. Start with an hour or two of shade and increase the time each day. Space your plants 24-36 inches apart. Remember that even in late May, we can still get some unexpected cool snaps, so keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared to cover your young plants if needed.
Watering Celebrity Tomato in Zone 4A (Northeast)
Celebrity Tomatoes need consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. But we also get our fair share of rain here in the Northeast, so it's all about finding the balance.
During the spring, when temperatures are cooler and we tend to get more frequent rain, you might only need to water once or twice a week, unless the soil feels dry. Once the summer heat kicks in, increase watering to 1-2 inches of water per week, depending on rainfall. Stick your finger about 2 inches into the soil β if it feels dry, it's time to water.
Water at the base of the plant to avoid getting the leaves wet, which can encourage fungal diseases in our moderately humid climate. Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and blossom end rot (dark, sunken spots on the bottom of the fruit). Overwatering can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot. Adding a layer of mulch around your plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds β straw works well for us in the Northeast.
Supporting Your Celebrity Tomato
Celebrity Tomatoes are considered determinate, but they can still get fairly bushy. So staking or caging them is a good idea.
Install your supports at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots later. Medium-height cages work great for this variety. As the plants grow, gently guide the stems inside the cage. This helps keep the fruit off the ground, improves air circulation, and makes harvesting easier.

Harvest Time
You can expect your first Celebrity Tomatoes to ripen from early August through mid September. The exact timing depends on the weather we get, but that's a pretty reliable window.
The tomatoes are ready to harvest when they're a deep red color, firm, and have a slight give when you gently squeeze them. To harvest, simply twist or cut the stem just above the fruit. Pick them regularly to encourage the plant to produce more. As we approach mid-September, keep a close eye on the forecast. If a frost is predicted, harvest any mature green tomatoes and bring them indoors to ripen. They'll still taste great!
Common Problems in Zone 4A (Northeast)
Here are a few common problems you might encounter with Celebrity Tomatoes in the Northeast:
Blossom Drop
- What it looks like: Flowers fall off without setting fruit. Small fruit turns yellow and drops. The plant itself looks healthy, but you get no tomatoes.
- What causes it: Temperature stress. Our summer nights can sometimes stay a bit too warm, and we get the odd day that's hotter than usual. This prevents proper pollination.
- How to fix/prevent it: Be patient! Usually, blossom drop is temporary. Provide afternoon shade during heat waves. Make sure plants are well-watered, and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen. You can even try hand-pollinating the flowers by gently shaking the plant.
Hornworms
- What it looks like: Large sections of leaves are stripped overnight. Look for large, green caterpillars (up to 4 inches long) with white stripes. You'll also see dark droppings on the leaves below.
- What causes it: These are the larvae of hawk moths, and they can devour your tomato plants quickly.
- How to fix/prevent it: Handpicking is the most effective method. They're surprisingly easy to spot once you know what to look for. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) spray is a safe, organic option. If you see a hornworm with white cocoons on its back, leave it! Those are parasitic wasp eggs that will take care of the hornworm for you.
Early Blight
- What it looks like: Brown spots with concentric rings (a target pattern) appear on the lower leaves first, then spread upwards. The leaves turn yellow and eventually drop off.
- What causes it: This is a fungal disease that thrives in warm, humid conditions. It spreads when soil splashes onto the lower leaves.
- How to fix/prevent it: Remove and destroy any affected leaves immediately (don't compost them). Mulch around the plants to prevent soil splash. Water at the base of the plant, and improve air circulation by spacing your plants properly. Copper fungicide can help slow the spread. Rotate your crops each year.
Northeast Specific Challenges: Our moderate heat and moderate-to-humid humidity, combined with our even rainfall, mean that blossom drop and early blight can be issues some years. Monitor your plants closely, and take action quickly if you see any signs of trouble.

Companion planting can give your Celebrity Tomatoes a boost. Basil is a classic companion because it repels tomato hornworms and other pests. Plus, it tastes great with tomatoes! Carrots and parsley can also help deter pests and attract beneficial insects. French marigolds are another good choice β they release a compound into the soil that repels nematodes.
Avoid planting brassicas (like cabbage and broccoli) near your tomatoes, as they can stunt their growth. Fennel is also a bad companion, as it inhibits the growth of many plants. And don't plant corn nearby, as it can attract tomato pests.
