Overview
Watermelons might seem like a long shot here in the Pacific Northwest, but our 203-day growing season gives you plenty of time to grow these sweet, refreshing fruits. While we don't get the blazing heat of traditional watermelon country, our mild summers and cool nights actually concentrate the sugars beautifully, creating incredibly flavorful melons that store well into fall. There's nothing quite like cutting into a homegrown watermelon on one of those perfect August evenings when it's still 75°F at sunset.
Our cool spring start and limited heat can make watermelons challenging, but with the right timing and variety selection, you can absolutely succeed. The key is working with our climate rather than against it—starting with warm soil, choosing shorter-season varieties, and taking advantage of our long, mild falls that let melons ripen slowly and develop complex flavors.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting watermelon seeds indoors makes sense if you want to squeeze every warm day out of our growing season, though it's not essential here in Zone 8A. Start seeds from late March through mid-April, about 3 weeks before your planned transplant date. Use individual peat pots or cell trays since watermelons hate having their roots disturbed—you'll transplant the entire pot.
Keep your seed trays warm (75-80°F) and use bottom watering to prevent damping off during our overcast spring days. A heat mat helps tremendously in March and April when indoor temperatures are still cool. Once seedlings emerge, they need bright light—either a sunny south window or grow lights for 12-14 hours daily.
The main advantage of starting indoors is getting a jump on our slow spring warmup, but handle those seedlings like they're made of glass. Watermelon roots are incredibly sensitive, and even minor root damage can set plants back weeks or kill them entirely.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your indoor-started watermelon seedlings from late April through late May, when nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 50°F and soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Wait for a settled weather pattern—those sudden cool spells in early May can shock young plants badly.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a full week, starting with just 2-3 hours of filtered outdoor light and building up to full sun exposure. Space plants 6-8 feet apart in all directions—they'll need every inch of that space by midsummer. If you're growing bush varieties, you can tighten spacing to 4-5 feet.
Choose your warmest, most protected spot with full sun exposure and good air circulation. Avoid low-lying areas where cool air settles during our typical spring mornings. Consider using row covers or Wall O' Water for the first few weeks if temperatures drop unexpectedly.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is actually the preferred method for watermelons in our zone—it avoids transplant shock entirely and often produces stronger plants. Wait until late April at the earliest, when soil temperature reaches a steady 65°F about 2 inches down. You can continue direct sowing through late July for fall harvests.
Prepare raised beds or mounded soil to warm faster in spring and drain better during our wet periods. Work in plenty of compost and aged manure—watermelons are heavy feeders. Plant 3-4 seeds per spot, spacing planting areas 6-8 feet apart. Once seedlings are 4 inches tall, thin to the strongest plant at each location.
Cover newly planted areas with row cover or clear plastic sheeting on cool nights, removing it during the day. This creates a mini greenhouse effect that helps germination in our unpredictable spring weather. Seeds typically germinate in 7-14 days when soil stays consistently warm.
Watering Watermelon in Zone 8A (Pacific Northwest)
Watermelons need consistent, deep watering throughout their growing season, but our dry Pacific Northwest summers make this manageable without the humidity problems that plague other regions. During active growth and fruit development, provide about 1-2 inches of water weekly, either through deep watering sessions or our occasional summer showers.
Use the finger test—stick your finger 2 inches into the soil near the base of the plant. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water. Water slowly and deeply at the base of plants rather than overhead, which helps prevent fungal issues and ensures water reaches the extensive root system. Soaker hoses work perfectly for this.
Once fruits start sizing up in mid to late summer, maintain consistent moisture to prevent blossom end rot and splitting. However, reduce watering significantly during the last 1-2 weeks before harvest—this concentrates sugars and prevents bland, watery fruit. Watch for wilting in the afternoon heat as your cue that they need water.
Apply a 2-3 inch layer of straw or grass clipping mulch around plants once the soil warms up in June. This conserves moisture during our dry summer months and keeps developing fruits off the ground, reducing rot risk in areas that might get morning dew.

Harvest Time
Your first watermelons will be ready from mid-July through late October, depending on when you planted and which varieties you chose. With our 85-day minimum growing season, even late plantings usually have time to mature before our first frost around late October.
Look for three key ripeness indicators: the ground spot (where the melon sits) turns from white to creamy yellow, the curly tendril closest to the fruit stem turns brown and dry, and the melon sounds hollow when thumped firmly. The surface also loses its glossy sheen and becomes slightly dull when fully ripe.
Harvest by cutting the stem with sharp shears rather than trying to pull the fruit free—this prevents damage to the vine and other developing fruits. Unlike some melons, watermelons don't continue ripening once picked, so don't harvest early hoping they'll sweeten up indoors.
As our first frost approaches in late October, harvest any remaining fruits that show signs of ripeness, even if they're not perfect. Green or very immature fruits won't ripen off the vine, but those that are close can finish developing indoors at room temperature. Properly ripe watermelons store for several weeks in a cool, dry place.
Common Problems in Zone 8A (Pacific Northwest)
Fusarium Wilt This soil-borne fungus causes plants to wilt on one side first, then spreads to the entire plant. You'll see yellowing leaves starting on one side, and if you cut the stem open, there are brown streaks inside. The fungus persists in soil for years and enters through root wounds, thriving in our warming summer soils.
Choose resistant varieties marked with 'F' on seed packets and practice a 4-year crop rotation with non-cucurbit family plants. Once a plant is infected, remove and destroy it immediately—there's no cure. Raising soil pH above 6.5 helps suppress the fungus, and avoiding root damage during cultivation prevents entry points.
Anthracnose Dark, sunken circular spots appear on fruits, stems, and leaves, sometimes with pink or orange spore masses during wet weather. This fungal pathogen spreads through rain splash and thrives when humidity builds up, though our dry summers usually keep it in check compared to more humid regions.
Prevent problems by avoiding overhead watering and removing infected plant debris immediately. Space plants properly for good air circulation, and apply copper fungicide preventatively if you've had problems before. Start with disease-free seeds and rotate planting locations annually.
Poor Pollination Fruits develop small, misshapen, or not at all, with flowers blooming but then dropping off. This happens when male and female flowers don't overlap timing-wise, or when our cool morning temperatures keep bees from being active early in the day.

Hand-pollinate using a small brush to transfer pollen from male flowers (no swelling behind the flower) to female flowers (small fruit visible behind petals).
