Overview
Acorn squash is a rewarding addition to any Pacific Northwest garden. Its sweet, nutty flavor shines in everything from savory roasts to comforting pies, and it stores well for enjoyment throughout our cool, wet winters. Plus, watching those vines sprawl and produce in our mild summer months is a uniquely satisfying experience.
While our region's relatively short, mild summers and overcast spring days can present challenges for heat-loving plants like squash, careful timing and a few simple strategies will ensure a bountiful harvest. Our long 210-day growing season, stretching from the last frost in early April to the first frost in early November, provides ample time for acorn squash to mature beautifully.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting acorn squash indoors is an option, but generally not necessary in our Zone 8B climate with its long growing season. However, if you're eager to get a jump start or want to ensure the earliest possible harvest, you can start seeds indoors from late March through mid April, about three weeks before you plan to transplant them outside.
Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good seed-starting mix. Keep them warm (around 70-75Β°F) and provide plenty of light, either from a sunny south-facing window or a grow light. Bottom watering is a great way to prevent damping-off; simply set the trays in a shallow dish of water and let the soil soak it up from the bottom. Remember that our springs here in the PNW can be slow to warm, so be patient and don't rush the process.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your acorn squash seedlings outdoors from mid April through mid May, once the soil has warmed up a bit and the risk of frost has passed. Before transplanting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. Start with an hour or two of shade and increase the time each day.
When transplanting, space the plants 36-48 inches apart to allow for their sprawling growth habit. Be mindful of our often-overcast spring days; choose a sunny location and protect young transplants from slugs, which are especially active during our wet springs.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the preferred and easiest method for growing acorn squash in most Pacific Northwest gardens. You can direct sow from mid April through late July. Acorn squash needs a long season, but starting from seed works perfectly well here.
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to provide plenty of nutrients. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space them 36-48 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seedlings emerge, usually within a week or two. Soil temperatures should be at least 60Β°F for good germination.
Watering Acorn Squash in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Acorn squash needs consistent watering, especially during its active growth phase. Aim for moderate watering throughout the growing season and reduce it slightly as the fruits mature. Our mild summer heat and dry summer months mean you will need to pay attention.
A good rule of thumb is to water deeply about once a week, providing about 1-2 inches of water. Use the "finger test" to determine if your squash needs water: stick your finger about 2 inches deep into the soil near the base of the plant. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water. Focus on watering at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage. With our dry summer humidity, this helps prevent fungal diseases.
Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and stunted growth. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is indicated by yellowing leaves and a mushy stem base. Mulching around your squash plants with straw or wood chips helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, which is especially beneficial during our drier months.

Harvest Time
You can expect your first acorn squash harvest from early July through early November, about 85 days after planting. The squash is ready to harvest when the skin is a dark green color with an orange spot where it touches the ground. The shell should be hard, and the stem should be dry and starting to crack.
Cut the squash from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving a 2-3 inch stem attached. This helps prevent rot during storage. Unlike some other squashes, acorn squash doesn't ripen off the vine, so make sure it's fully mature before harvesting.
As our first frost approaches around early November, harvest any remaining squash, even if they aren't fully mature. Smaller, less mature squash can still be used in cooking, though they may not store as well.
Common Problems in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Here are some common problems you might encounter when growing acorn squash in the Pacific Northwest:
Squash Vine Borer
- What it looks like: Wilting vines, small holes at the base of the stem with sawdust-like frass (borer excrement).
- What causes it: The larvae of a moth that burrows into the stem and feeds on the inside, disrupting water and nutrient flow. Our mild PNW summers still allow these pests to thrive.
- How to fix/prevent it: Wrap the base of the stem with aluminum foil or netting to prevent the moth from laying eggs. Check stems regularly for entry holes and carefully slit the stem open to remove the borer. Mound soil over the cut stem to encourage rooting.
Powdery Mildew
- What it looks like: White or grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. Leaves curl, yellow, and die. Reduces plant vigor.
- What causes it: Various fungi that thrive in warm days, cool nights, and moderate humidity. Dry leaf surfaces actually favor it (unlike most fungi).
- How to fix/prevent it: Improve air circulation through spacing and pruning. Remove affected leaves. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays help. Milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) is surprisingly effective. Plant resistant varieties.
Squash Bugs
- What it looks like: Gray-brown shield-shaped bugs on leaf undersides. Bronze egg clusters on leaves. Wilting leaves that turn brown and crispy.
- What causes it: Sap-sucking insects that inject toxin while feeding. Adults overwinter in garden debris and emerge in spring.
- How to fix/prevent it: Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters. Board traps (adults hide under boards at night β flip and destroy in morning). Neem oil spray. Remove plant debris in fall. Companion plant with nasturtiums.
Cucumber Beetles
- What it looks like: Small yellow-green beetles with black spots or stripes on leaves and flowers. Leaves have small holes. Plants may wilt suddenly from bacterial wilt transmitted by beetles.
- What causes it: Adult beetles feed on leaves and flowers and transmit bacterial wilt disease. Larvae feed on roots.
- How to fix/prevent it: Row covers until flowering (remove for pollination). Hand-pick adults. Yellow sticky traps. Neem oil or pyrethrin spray. Kaolin clay coating. Interplant with radishes or nasturtiums as trap crops.
Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: The combination of our mild summer heat and dry-summer rainfall patterns can create ideal conditions for powdery mildew. Keep a close eye on your plants and take preventative measures early in the season. Late blight is less of a concern for squash than for tomatoes, but it's still wise to ensure good air circulation to minimize any risk. Slugs can be a nuisance, especially for young plants, so use your preferred slug control methods.
