While our cool spring soils can slow germination initially and summer heat stress occasionally causes bitter flavors, radishes are forgiving enough that proper timing makes these challenges manageable. With a 210-day growing season, you have multiple opportunities to get plantings right, and radishes grow so quickly that even failed sowings can be replanted without losing much time.
Transplanting Outdoors
While radishes can be transplanted, there's rarely a good reason to start them indoors since they grow so quickly from direct-sown seed. If you do have seedlings to transplant, you can move them outdoors from early March through mid-April once the soil is workable.
Harden off transplants gradually over a week, starting with a few hours of filtered sunlight and working up to full outdoor conditions. Space plants 2-4 inches apart in rows or scatter them in blocks.
Watch for temperature swings during our changeable spring weather - radishes handle light frost just fine, but protect young transplants from driving rain that can damage tender leaves.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the best method for radishes in the Pacific Northwest. Prepare loose, well-draining soil and sow seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep, spacing them 2-4 inches apart. In our heavy clay soils, work in compost to improve drainage and prevent roots from becoming misshapen. For succession harvests, sow new seeds every 2-3 weeks through the growing season.
Skip the heat of midsummer (late July through early August) when our dry conditions and occasional hot spells can cause roots to turn woody and overly pungent. Resume plantings in late August for excellent fall harvests that benefit from cooling temperatures.
Watering Radish in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Radishes need consistent moisture throughout their short 25-day growing cycle to develop crisp, mild-flavored roots. Uneven watering causes woody, pithy textures and intensely hot flavors that make them nearly inedible. During our wet spring months, natural rainfall often provides adequate moisture, but you'll need to supplement during the dry summer months.
Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2 inches deep - the soil should feel consistently damp but not waterlogged. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, applying it at soil level rather than overhead to prevent leaf diseases in our humid spring conditions. Look for radish shoulders pushing up above the soil surface as the first sign of maturity. Spring radish types are typically ready when they reach about 1 inch in diameter - pull one to test before harvesting the whole row. The roots should feel firm and crisp with bright, perky greens attached.
Don't leave mature radishes in the ground too long, as they quickly turn woody and develop an unpleasantly sharp bite.
