Brussels sprouts, with their nutty flavor that sweetens after a kiss of frost, are a real treat to grow in the Pacific Northwest. Freshly harvested sprouts taste far superior to anything you'll find at the grocery store, and they're incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Plus, there's a unique satisfaction in harvesting those little cabbages after a long growing season.
While our mild summers and wet springs present some challenges, especially with getting warm-season crops going, Brussels sprouts thrive with a little planning. With our 203-day growing season, starting them indoors early gives you a great head start for a successful harvest.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Brussels sprouts indoors is the way to go in the PNW, giving them a jumpstart against our cool spring soil. Begin in mid-February through mid-March, about six weeks before you plan to transplant. Use seed trays filled with a good seed-starting mix, and provide warmth with a heat mat until the seedlings emerge.
Consistent moisture is key. Bottom watering is ideal β set the tray in a shallow dish of water and let the soil soak it up from the bottom. This prevents damping-off and keeps the leaves dry.
Remember our overcast spring days can make seedlings leggy, so provide supplemental light with a grow light. This helps them grow strong and sturdy, ready for transplanting.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Brussels sprouts seedlings outdoors in early April through early May. Before transplanting, you'll need to harden them off. Gradually expose them to outdoor conditions for about a week, increasing the time each day.
Plant them 18-24 inches apart in well-drained soil. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as we can still get some chilly snaps. Covering the young plants with horticultural fleece or cloches will protect them from unexpected frosts.
Watering Brussels Sprouts in Zone 8A (Pacific Northwest)
Consistent watering is crucial for Brussels sprouts, especially during our dry summer months. Without enough moisture, the sprouts will be loose and bitter. The key is to maintain even soil moisture throughout the growing season.
In the Pacific Northwest, you'll likely need to water deeply about 1-2 times per week during the drier periods of July and August. Use the finger test: stick your finger into the soil about 2 inches deep. If it feels dry, it's time to water. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage, which can encourage fungal diseases in our sometimes humid conditions. Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and small, loose sprouts. Overwatering can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot. Mulching around the plants with straw or wood chips helps retain moisture and keeps the soil cool.
Supporting Your Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts grow tall and can become top-heavy, especially when those sprouts start to develop. This is where support comes in handy, particularly in our sometimes windy conditions. Staking is the best option.
Use sturdy stakes, like bamboo or metal, and insert them into the ground near the plants when they reach about 2 feet tall. Gently tie the main stalk to the stake with soft twine or plant ties, ensuring you don't constrict the plant's growth. This will prevent the plants from toppling over and ensure a good harvest.
Pruning & Maintaining Brussels Sprouts
Pruning Brussels sprouts is minimal but beneficial. As the sprouts develop upward along the stalk, remove the yellowing or damaged lower leaves. This improves air circulation and directs the plant's energy towards sprout production.
About 3-4 weeks before you plan to harvest, top the plant by cutting off the growing tip. This forces the plant to put its energy into maturing the existing sprouts.
As our first frost approaches in late October, you can harvest any remaining sprouts or leave them on the stalk for a sweeter flavor after a frost.

In the Pacific Northwest, you can expect your first Brussels sprouts harvest from early July through mid-August, depending on when you transplanted. The sprouts are ready to harvest when they are firm, tight, and about 1-2 inches in diameter. Start harvesting from the bottom of the stalk upwards, twisting or cutting off the sprouts.
After harvesting the lower sprouts, the plant will continue to produce higher up the stalk. Remove any yellowing leaves to encourage further sprout development.
Don't be afraid to leave the stalks in the garden as the weather cools. Brussels sprouts actually taste sweeter after a frost, so a late-season chill can enhance their flavor. As late October approaches, harvest any remaining sprouts before a hard freeze.

Aphids
- What it looks like: Clusters of tiny green, black, or white insects on stems and leaf undersides. Sticky honeydew residue. Curled or distorted new growth.
- What causes it: Rapid-reproducing sap-sucking insects. Populations explode in warm weather. Ant colonies may farm them for honeydew.

Loose Sprouts from Heat
- What it looks like: Sprouts that don't form tightly, appearing leafy and open. They may also taste bitter.
- What causes it: High temperatures during sprout development. Even our mild summers can stress Brussels sprouts if they aren't properly watered.
- How to fix/prevent it: Provide consistent watering, especially during hot spells. Mulch around the plants to keep the soil cool. Plant in a location that receives some afternoon shade.
Clubroot
- What it looks like: Stunted growth, wilting in afternoon heat, yellowing leaves. Roots are swollen, distorted, and club-shaped when dug up.
- What causes it: Soil-borne pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) that persists in soil for 10+ years. Favors acidic, wet soil, which we often have in the PNW.
- How to fix/prevent it: Raise soil pH to 7.0-7.2 with lime. Improve drainage. Rotate brassicas on a 7-year cycle. Remove and destroy infected plants (don't compost). Start transplants in sterile mix.
Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: Our mild, dry summers are generally favorable for Brussels sprouts, but late blight can still be a concern. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimize risk. Cool soil in spring can slow initial growth, so starting indoors is crucial.
