While our mild summers and wet springs can present challenges, Brussels sprouts are well-suited to our long growing season. Starting them early and choosing the right varieties means you can enjoy a bountiful harvest within our 210-day window.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Brussels sprouts indoors gives them a head start, crucial for our shorter summers. Aim to sow your seeds indoors from mid-February through early March, roughly six weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. This timing helps you avoid the cool, wet soil of early spring and get a jump on the growing season.
Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist, and bottom watering helps prevent damping off. Place the trays in a warm location, ideally around 70Β°F, and provide plenty of light, especially during those overcast spring days.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Brussels sprouts seedlings outdoors from early to late April, once the soil has warmed up a bit. Before planting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the cooler temperatures and stronger sunlight.
Space your plants 18-24 inches apart in rows. This spacing allows for good air circulation, which is especially important in our often-damp springs. Be mindful of late frosts, which can still occur during this time, and be prepared to cover your young plants if necessary.
Watering Brussels Sprouts in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Brussels sprouts need consistent moisture, especially during the dry summer months. In the Pacific Northwest, this means paying close attention to watering, even though our summers are mild. Inconsistent watering can lead to loose, bitter sprouts, which nobody wants.
During the spring, when rainfall is more frequent, you may only need to supplement with watering once or twice a week, giving them about 1 inch of water each time. Use the finger test β if the top two inches of soil feel dry, it's time to water. As the dry summer months arrive, increase watering to 1-2 inches per week, delivered at the base of the plant to avoid fungal issues.
Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and stunted growth. Overwatering, on the other hand, can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot. A layer of mulch, like straw or compost, will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, which is crucial in our climate.
Supporting Your Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts can get quite tall and top-heavy, especially as the sprouts develop. Given our occasional windy conditions, providing support is essential to prevent them from toppling over. Staking is the most effective method.
Insert sturdy stakes next to each plant when they reach about two feet tall. Use soft twine or plant ties to loosely secure the stalks to the stakes. This will help keep them upright and prevent wind damage.
Pruning & Maintaining Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts benefit from minimal pruning. As the sprouts start to form along the stalk, remove the yellowing or damaged leaves from the bottom of the plant. This improves air circulation and directs the plant's energy towards sprout development.
About 3-4 weeks before you plan to harvest, top the plant by cutting off the top cluster of leaves. This encourages the plant to put its energy into maturing the existing sprouts. As our first frost approaches in early November, you can harvest any remaining sprouts, even if they're not fully mature.

Harvest Time
In the Pacific Northwest, you can expect your first harvest of Brussels sprouts from early July through mid August, about 90 days after transplanting. The sprouts are ready to harvest when they are firm, tight, and about 1-2 inches in diameter. Start harvesting from the bottom of the stalk and work your way up.
To harvest, simply twist or snap off the sprouts. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing more sprouts higher up the stalk. Many gardeners in our region find that the flavor of Brussels sprouts improves dramatically after a light frost, becoming sweeter and less bitter.
As the first frost approaches in early November, harvest any remaining sprouts, even if they are on the smaller side. Don't let them go to waste!
Common Problems in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Here are some common problems you might encounter with Brussels sprouts in the Pacific Northwest:
Aphids
- What it looks like: Clusters of tiny soft-bodied insects (green, black, or white) on stems and leaf undersides. Sticky honeydew residue. Curled or distorted new growth.
- What causes it: Rapid-reproducing sap-sucking insects. Populations explode in warm weather. Ant colonies may farm them for honeydew.
- How to fix/prevent it: Strong water spray knocks them off. Encourage ladybugs and lacewings (natural predators). Insecticidal soap for heavy infestations. Neem oil works systemically. Avoid excess nitrogen fertilizer (it attracts them).
Cabbage Worms
- What it looks like: Smooth green caterpillars on brassica leaves. Irregular holes chewed in leaves. Dark green droppings. White butterflies hovering around plants.
- What causes it: Larvae of white cabbage butterflies. Multiple generations per season in warm climates.
- How to fix/prevent it: Bt spray is very effective. Floating row covers prevent egg laying. Handpick caterpillars. Interplant with aromatic herbs (thyme, sage). Encourage parasitic wasps.
Loose Sprouts from Heat
- What it looks like: Sprouts that are not tightly closed and firm, but rather loose and leafy. They may also taste bitter.
- What causes it: Inconsistent watering and periods of even mild heat stress during sprout development.
- How to fix/prevent it: Ensure consistent watering, especially during dry spells. Provide shade during the hottest part of the day with shade cloth. Choose heat-tolerant varieties.
Clubroot
- What it looks like: Stunted growth, wilting in afternoon heat, yellowing leaves. Roots are swollen, distorted, and club-shaped when dug up.
- What causes it: Soil-borne pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) that persists in soil for 10+ years. Favors acidic, wet soil.
- How to fix/prevent it: Raise soil pH to 7.0-7.2 with lime. Improve drainage. Rotate brassicas on a 7-year cycle. Remove and destroy infected plants (don't compost). Start transplants in sterile mix.
Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: Late blight isn't usually a major issue for Brussels sprouts directly, but keeping an eye on your tomatoes and potatoes nearby is important. Cool soil in spring can slow initial growth, so starting indoors is key. While our mild summers are generally beneficial, those occasional heat spikes can cause loose sprouts if you're not vigilant about watering. Slugs can be a nuisance, especially for young plants, so use your preferred slug control methods.
