Homegrown tomatoes are perhaps the most rewarding crop you can grow in our Pacific Northwest gardens. Our mild summers and cool nights create ideal conditions for developing that complex, sweet-tart flavor that makes store-bought tomatoes taste like cardboard in comparison. With our 210-day growing season, you have plenty of time to nurture plants from seed to that first perfect August harvest.
The key challenge here is working with our cool spring soil and relatively short window of real warmth for heat-loving crops like tomatoes. But don't let that discourage you β our consistent mild temperatures and low humidity actually reduce many pest pressures that plague gardeners in hotter climates, making tomatoes quite manageable once you get the timing right.
Starting Seeds Indoors
You'll need to start tomato seeds indoors in early to late March, giving them about 6 weeks to develop before transplanting outside. This indoor head start is absolutely essential in our region β direct sowing simply won't work with our cool spring soil temperatures.
Set up seed trays in a warm spot (70-75Β°F) with good light β a south-facing window works, but grow lights give more reliable results during our overcast spring days. Plant seeds ΒΌ inch deep in quality seed-starting mix. Bottom watering works best to prevent damping off and keeps soil moisture consistent without waterlogged surfaces.
Keep seedlings under lights for 12-14 hours daily once they germinate. When they develop their first true leaves, transplant to individual 3-4 inch pots. By mid to late April, you'll have stocky seedlings ready for hardening off β much more reliable than trying to rush the season outdoors.
Transplanting Outdoors
Plan to transplant your tomato seedlings outdoors from mid-April through mid-May, once nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 50Β°F. This timing works well in our Zone 8B climate, though you might need row covers if we get an unexpected cool snap.
Spend a full week hardening off your seedlings, gradually increasing their outdoor exposure. Start with 2-3 hours of filtered sunlight, building up to full sun and overnight exposure by the end of the week. This process is crucial β our spring weather can be unpredictable, and shocked plants often struggle for weeks.
Space plants 24-36 inches apart to ensure good air circulation, which helps prevent disease in our occasionally humid spring conditions. Look for stocky plants with thick stems and dark green leaves. Avoid any seedlings that are already flowering or look leggy β they rarely catch up to properly grown transplants.
Watering Tomato in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Tomatoes need consistent moisture throughout the growing season, and this becomes your most important task during our dry summer months. While other regions deal with humidity and frequent summer storms, you'll be managing all irrigation from late June through September.
Check soil moisture by sticking your finger 2 inches deep β if it's dry, it's time to water. During our mild summers (rarely above 85Β°F), mature plants typically need about 1-1.5 inches per week, delivered in 2-3 deep waterings rather than daily sprinkles. Water at the base of plants, not overhead β our dry summer air means less disease pressure, but wet foliage can still invite problems.
The biggest mistake here is inconsistent watering, which causes blossom end rot, fruit cracking, and poor production. Set up soaker hoses or drip irrigation if possible, especially since you'll be watering regularly from July through early October. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch around plants helps tremendously in maintaining that consistent moisture.
Watch for signs of stress: wilting during the heat of the day (even at 80Β°F) suggests underwatering, while yellowing leaves and sluggish growth often indicate overwatering in our clay soils.
Supporting Your Tomato
Install cages or stakes at planting time, before roots spread β trying to add support later damages the root system. Since most tomato varieties are indeterminate (continuing to grow and produce until frost), you'll need sturdy 5-6 foot cages or strong stakes.
Heavy-duty wire cages work best for most gardeners, though they can be expensive. Alternatively, use 6-8 foot stakes with soft ties to secure the main stem as it grows. Avoid flimsy store-bought cages β they'll collapse under the weight of a productive plant by mid-summer.
Train plants by gently tying or threading branches through cage openings weekly. Our long, mild fall season means plants often keep producing into October, so that initial investment in good support pays off with months of harvest.
Pruning & Maintaining Tomato

As we approach our first frost in early November, stop pruning and let the plant focus energy on ripening existing fruit rather than producing new growth. Some gardeners remove growing tips in late September to encourage the plant to ripen remaining tomatoes before cold weather arrives.

Continue harvesting through our excellent fall weather β plants often produce until the first frost in early November. If frost threatens and you have green tomatoes, harvest them and ripen indoors on a counter or in paper bags. Mature green tomatoes (full-sized but still green) will ripen well indoors over several weeks.
Check plants every 2-3 days during peak season. Overripe fruit attracts wasps and can split after our occasional late-summer rains, so stay on top of harvest timing.
Common Problems in Zone 8B (Pacific Northwest)
Blossom End Rot Dark, sunken patches on the bottom of tomatoes, especially early in the season. This looks like rot but isn't a disease β it's a calcium deficiency caused by inconsistent watering. The most common problem for PNW tomato growers.
Our dry summers make consistent watering critical. Mulch heavily to maintain even soil moisture, and water deeply but less frequently rather than light daily watering. Calcium sprays help marginally, but consistent irrigation is the real solution.
Early Blight Brown spots with concentric rings (bullseye pattern) on lower leaves, spreading upward. Leaves yellow and drop. This fungal disease thrives when soil splashes onto foliage during watering.
Remove affected leaves immediately and mulch around plants to prevent soil splash. Water at the base, not overhead. Our dry summer air helps limit spread, but spring conditions can encourage this disease. Copper fungicide helps slow progression.
Hornworms Large sections of leaves stripped overnight, with dark droppings on remaining foliage. These 3-4 inch green caterpillars with white stripes can defoliate plants rapidly.
Hand-picking works best β they don't bite and are easy to spot once you know what to look for. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) spray is effective for severe infestations. If you see white cocoons on a hornworm, leave it alone β those are beneficial parasitic wasps.
Cracking Splits in tomato skin, either in rings around the stem or radiating lines. Happens when plants get heavy water after dry periods, causing fruit to absorb water faster than skin can expand.
Maintain consistent soil moisture through mulching and regular irrigation. Our dry summers followed by occasional late-season rains can trigger this problem, so steady watering habits prevent most cracking issues.
