Brussels sprouts might not be the first thing that comes to mind for desert gardening, but their unique, nutty flavor and satisfying texture make them a worthwhile addition to your garden. Plus, they're surprisingly versatile in the kitchen β roasted, sautΓ©ed, or even shredded raw in salads. The satisfaction of harvesting your own sprouts after babying them through the summer survival phase is hard to beat.
Our extreme heat and alkaline soil here in the Desert Southwest definitely present challenges. But with careful timing and a little extra attention, you can absolutely grow Brussels sprouts during our two growing seasons and take advantage of our 313-day growing season. Starting early and choosing the right varieties are key to success.
Starting Seeds Indoors
To get a jump start on our very-early spring and beat the extreme heat, start your Brussels sprouts indoors from mid-December through early January. This gives them about six weeks to get established before transplanting. Use seed trays or small pots filled with a good quality seed-starting mix.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Bottom watering is a great way to prevent damping-off. Provide warmth (around 70Β°F) and plenty of light β a grow light is ideal. Once the seedlings emerge, make sure they get at least 6-8 hours of light per day.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Brussels sprouts seedlings outdoors in early to late February. This gives them time to establish before the extreme heat hits. Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week.
Space the plants 18-24 inches apart in rows. February in the Desert SW can still bring some chilly nights, so be prepared to cover the seedlings if a late frost is predicted. Our alkaline soil is a challenge, so amend the planting hole with compost to improve drainage and nutrient availability.
Watering Brussels Sprouts in Zone 9B (Desert Southwest)
Brussels sprouts need consistent moisture to produce those tight, flavorful sprouts we all crave. In our arid Desert Southwest climate, regular watering is especially critical, particularly during the long, hot days. Aim for about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, especially during the monsoon season.
Use the "finger test" β stick your finger about 2 inches into the soil near the base of the plant. If it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply at the base of the plant to encourage deep root growth and avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal issues in our humid monsoon season.
Underwatering will result in loose, bitter sprouts, while overwatering can lead to root rot. Wilting leaves, even in the morning, indicate underwatering. Yellowing leaves and stunted growth can be signs of overwatering. A good layer of organic mulch, like straw or wood chips, will help retain moisture in the soil and keep the roots cool during our extreme heat.
Supporting Your Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts can get quite tall and top-heavy, especially once the sprouts start to develop. Add in our occasional high winds, and they can easily topple over. Staking is essential for keeping your plants upright and preventing damage.
Bamboo stakes or sturdy tomato cages work well. Install the support when the plants are about 2 feet tall. Gently tie the main stem to the stake with soft twine or plant ties, making sure not to constrict the stem's growth.
Pruning & Maintaining Brussels Sprouts
Pruning Brussels sprouts is minimal but important for maximizing sprout production. As the sprouts develop from the bottom up, remove the lower leaves that turn yellow or brown. This improves air circulation and directs the plant's energy towards sprout development.
About 3-4 weeks before your anticipated harvest, top the plant by cutting off the growing tip. This forces the plant to put all its remaining energy into the existing sprouts, resulting in larger, more uniform sprouts. As our first frost approaches around mid- December, harvest any remaining sprouts, even if they're small.

In the Desert Southwest, you can expect your first Brussels sprouts harvest from early May through mid June, about 90 days after transplanting. Look for firm, tight sprouts that are 1-2 inches in diameter. Start harvesting from the bottom of the stalk upwards, twisting or cutting the sprouts off cleanly.
Don't pull or yank, as this can damage the plant. Brussels sprouts actually taste better after a light frost, so if possible, leave them on the plant until after our first frost in mid- December. The cold temperatures convert starches to sugars, resulting in a sweeter, more flavorful sprout.
Continue harvesting the sprouts as they mature, and remove any yellowing leaves to encourage further production. If a hard freeze is predicted, harvest all remaining sprouts, regardless of size. You can store them in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
