Transplanting Outdoors
While potatoes are typically grown from seed potatoes rather than transplants, you can start seed potatoes indoors in containers during late January through mid-February if you want to get a jump on the season. This works especially well if you're dealing with particularly cold winter weather or want to pre-sprout your seed potatoes.
If you choose this method, gradually harden off your sprouted potatoes over one week before transplanting outdoors. Start with a few hours of morning sun, then gradually increase exposure while avoiding our intense afternoon heat. Space your transplants 12 inches apart in prepared beds.
