Butternut squash is a fantastic addition to any Mid-Atlantic garden. Its sweet, nutty flavor elevates everything from soups to roasted vegetable medleys, and the satisfaction of harvesting your own winter squash after our humid summers is hard to beat. Plus, it stores well, giving you homegrown goodness even after our four seasons have turned to cold winters.
We Mid-Atlantic gardeners know our weather can be a bit unpredictable, especially in the spring. Deer pressure and Japanese beetles add to the challenge, but with a good plan and the advantage of our 188-day growing season, you can definitely grow beautiful butternut squash.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting butternut squash indoors gives you a head start, but it's not essential in our Zone 6A Mid-Atlantic climate. It's more useful if you're aiming for an extra-early harvest. If you want to try it, start your seeds indoors in early to late April, about three weeks before you plan to transplant them outside.
Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix. Keep them warm and provide plenty of light β a sunny windowsill might work, but grow lights are better. Water from the bottom by placing the tray in a shallow dish of water until the soil surface is moist; this encourages strong root growth. Remember that our spring weather can be variable, so watch for late frost warnings before transplanting.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your butternut squash seedlings outdoors in late April through mid May, once the danger of frost has passed. Before planting, you'll need to harden them off. This means gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week, starting with a couple of hours of shade each day.
Space your plants 36-60 inches apart in a sunny spot. Keep an eye on the weather forecast; a sudden cold snap can set them back. If a late frost is predicted, cover the seedlings with row covers or blankets.

Butternut squash needs consistent moisture, especially during its active growth phase. In our Mid-Atlantic climate with moderate-to-hot summers and humid conditions, watering correctly is key. Give your plants a good, deep watering about once a week, providing around 1-2 inches of water.
Use the finger test to check soil moisture: stick your finger about 2 inches into the soil near the plant. If it feels dry, it's time to water. Aim to water at the base of the plant rather than overhead, especially with our humid summers, to minimize fungal diseases.
Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and stunted growth. Overwatering, on the other hand, can lead to root rot, indicated by yellowing leaves and a generally unhealthy appearance. A layer of mulch around your plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

You can expect to harvest your butternut squash from late July through mid October, about 100 days after planting. The best indicators of ripeness are a uniformly tan skin with no green streaks remaining, a hard shell that you can't easily pierce with your fingernail, and a dry, corky stem.
To harvest, use a sharp knife or pruners to cut the squash from the vine, leaving a few inches of stem attached. Be careful not to damage the squash, as this can shorten its storage life. Butternut squash doesn't ripen off the vine, so make sure it's fully mature before harvesting.
As our first frost approaches in mid- October, harvest any remaining squash, even if they're not quite fully ripe. These may not store as long as fully mature squash, but they're still worth using in your kitchen. Cure your harvested squash in a warm, dry place for about two weeks to harden the skin and improve storage quality.

Squash Vine Borer

- How to fix/prevent it: Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters. Board traps (adults hide under boards at night β flip and destroy in morning). Neem oil spray. Remove plant debris in fall. Companion plant with nasturtiums.
