We might not have the intense heat of other regions, but we can certainly grow some great squash.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Butternut squash indoors is optional in our region, but it can give you a head start, especially if you're eager for an early harvest. If you choose to start indoors, aim for mid April through early May, about three weeks before you plan to transplant. This helps avoid the cool, overcast spring days we often experience.
Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix, and provide warmth and plenty of light. A heat mat can help with germination, and grow lights are beneficial, given our often-cloudy spring weather. Don't forget to water from the bottom to encourage strong root growth and prevent damping-off.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Butternut squash seedlings outdoors from mid May through early June, after the risk of frost has passed. Before transplanting, harden off your seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the sunlight and temperatures.
When transplanting, space the seedlings 36-60 inches apart to give them plenty of room to sprawl. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Keep an eye on the weather forecast; a late cold snap could still occur, so be prepared to cover your young plants if necessary.

During our dry summer months, watering at the base of the plant is best to avoid wetting the foliage, which can encourage fungal diseases. Harvest Time
Expect your first harvest of Butternut squash from mid August through early October, about 100 days after planting. Look for these signs of ripeness: the skin should be a uniform tan color with no green streaks remaining. The shell should be hard, and the stem should be dry and corky.
Harvest the squash carefully, cutting the stem with a sharp knife or pruners, leaving about 2-3 inches of stem attached to the fruit. Avoid damaging the squash during harvest, as this can shorten its storage life. After harvesting, cure the squash in a warm, dry place for about two weeks to further harden the skin and improve its flavor.
As our first frost approaches in early October, harvest any remaining squash, even if they're not fully ripe. While they won't ripen off the vine, you can still use them in cooking, though they might not be as sweet.

Here are some common problems you might encounter growing Butternut squash in the Pacific Northwest:
Squash Vine Borer
- What it looks like: Wilting vines, holes in the stems near the base of the plant, and sawdust-like frass near the holes.
- What causes it: Larvae of a moth that bore into the stems and feed on the inside of the vine.
- How to fix/prevent it: Wrap the base of the stems with foil or netting to prevent the moths from laying eggs. Inject Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) into the stems to kill the larvae. Remove and destroy infested vines.
Powdery Mildew
- What it looks like: White or grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. Leaves curl, yellow, and die. Reduces plant vigor.
- What causes it: Various fungi that thrive in warm days, cool nights, and moderate humidity. Dry leaf surfaces actually favor it (unlike most fungi).
- How to fix/prevent it: Improve air circulation through spacing and pruning. Remove affected leaves. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays help. Milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) is surprisingly effective. Plant resistant varieties.
Squash Bugs
- What it looks like: Gray-brown shield-shaped bugs on leaf undersides. Bronze egg clusters on leaves. Wilting leaves that turn brown and crispy.
- What causes it: Sap-sucking insects that inject toxin while feeding. Adults overwinter in garden debris and emerge in spring.
- How to fix/prevent it: Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters. Board traps (adults hide under boards at night β flip and destroy in morning). Neem oil spray. Remove plant debris in fall. Companion plant with nasturtiums.
Poor Pollination
- What it looks like: Fruit is small, misshapen, or fails to develop. Partially pollinated fruit develops unevenly. Flowers bloom but fall off.
- What causes it: Insufficient pollinator visits, weather too hot or cold for pollination, or timing issues (male/female flowers don't overlap).

Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: Our mild summers and dry-summer humidity can be both a blessing and a curse. Powdery mildew can still be an issue, so ensure good air circulation. Late blight is less of a concern for squash than it is for tomatoes, but it's still wise to practice good garden hygiene. Cool soil in spring can slow growth, so be patient and wait for the soil to warm up before planting. Slugs can be a nuisance, especially for young plants, so use slug bait or other control methods.
