Starting Seeds Indoors

Start seeds mid-April through early May, about 3 weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. This timing works around our characteristically slow spring warm-up.
Use biodegradable pots since cantaloupe roots hate transplant shock. Keep seed trays consistently warm—75-85°F is ideal—and provide strong light once they germinate. Bottom watering works best to avoid damping off, which can be problematic in our overcast spring conditions. The seedlings need to be sturdy and well-established before facing our variable spring weather.
Remember that indoor-started melons often struggle more than direct-sown ones. If you go this route, be extra careful with hardening off and choose your transplant timing carefully.
Transplanting Outdoors
