Transplanting Outdoors
Transplanting potato seedlings isn't the typical approach since potatoes grow from seed potatoes (tuber pieces) rather than true seeds. However, if you're growing specialty varieties from actual seeds or have greenhouse-started plants, transplant them outdoors from mid-April through early May.
Harden off any seedlings gradually over one week, starting with 2-3 hours of morning sun and building to full outdoor exposure. Space transplants 12 inches apart in rows, ensuring soil temperature has stabilized above 45Β°F. Our Plains wind can stress young transplants, so consider temporary wind protection with row covers or stakes and fabric.
Watch for late cold snaps that can damage tender growth. Even semi-hardy potato plants struggle with sudden temperature drops below 28Β°F, which aren't uncommon in our variable spring weather.
Direct Sowing
Direct planting seed potatoes is the recommended method for Plains gardeners and works reliably from mid-April through late June. Plant when soil temperature reaches 45Β°F and stays there consistently - usually mid to late April in most of Zone 5A's Great Plains region.
Cut seed potatoes into pieces with at least two eyes each, allowing cut surfaces to dry for 24-48 hours before planting. This prevents rot in our sometimes-unpredictable spring soil conditions. Watering Potato in Zone 5A (Great Plains)
Potatoes need consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions, which can be tricky in our variable Plains rainfall climate. Harvest Time
