Overview
Sage is a fantastic addition to any Pacific Northwest garden. Its earthy flavor elevates everything from roasted vegetables to Thanksgiving stuffing, and its silvery foliage looks beautiful alongside other herbs. Plus, the fragrant leaves taste even better after our cool nights.
While our wet springs and mild summers can present challenges, especially with soil temps, Sage is surprisingly adaptable. With a growing season that stretches from mid-April to mid-October, you have plenty of time to get a good harvest.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Sage indoors gives you a head start, but it's not strictly necessary in our climate. If you want the biggest, earliest harvest, aim to start seeds indoors from early to late March. This gives you about 6 weeks to get them established before transplanting.
Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix, and provide consistent warmth (around 70Β°F) and bright light. A heat mat can help speed germination, and a grow light will prevent leggy seedlings during our overcast spring days. Remember to bottom water your seedlings to encourage strong root growth and prevent damping off.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Sage seedlings outdoors from mid April through mid May, once the soil has warmed up a bit. Before planting, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week. This helps them adjust to the cooler temperatures and stronger sunlight.
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, and space your plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for good air circulation. Even though we're past our typical last frost date, keep an eye on the forecast. A late cold snap can still happen, so be ready to cover your seedlings if needed. Keep in mind that Sage starts are widely available at local nurseries if you prefer not to start from seed.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing Sage is a viable option, especially if you have well-draining soil. Sow seeds from mid April through late July, after the soil has warmed up to at least 60Β°F. Prepare the soil by loosening it and removing any weeds.
Sow seeds about ΒΌ inch deep and keep the soil consistently moist until they germinate. Once seedlings emerge, thin them to 18-24 inches apart. Direct sowing can be slower than transplanting, but it eliminates the risk of transplant shock.
Watering Sage in Zone 7A (Pacific Northwest)
Sage is drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for our dry summer months in the Pacific Northwest. Overwatering is a bigger concern than underwatering, as it can lead to root rot and diminish the plant's flavor. During our wet springs, you may not need to water at all.
Once the dry summer months arrive, check the soil moisture regularly using the "finger test." Stick your finger about 2 inches deep into the soil near the base of the plant. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, watering deeply at the base of the plant rather than overhead. This helps prevent fungal diseases in our sometimes humid conditions.
Watch for signs of underwatering, such as wilting leaves, or overwatering, such as yellowing leaves. A layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling it up against the stem, which can promote rot.
Pruning & Maintaining Sage
Sage requires minimal pruning, which is great for low-maintenance gardens. In the spring, after the last frost, prune your Sage plant to remove any dead or woody growth and maintain its shape. This encourages new growth and keeps the plant healthy.
Cut back the stems by about 1/3, but avoid cutting into the very old, thick wood, as it may not regrow. Throughout the growing season, you can pinch back the tips of the stems to encourage bushier growth. As the first frost approaches in mid- October, stop pruning to allow the plant to harden off for winter.

Harvest Time
You can start harvesting Sage leaves as soon as the plant is established, usually from early July through late October in our region. The best flavor is said to be in the morning after the dew has dried. Simply snip off the leaves as needed, using sharp scissors or pruning shears.
To encourage continued production, harvest regularly, taking care not to remove more than 1/3 of the plant at a time. As the season winds down and the first frost approaches in mid- October, harvest any remaining leaves that look good. You can dry them for later use or use them fresh in your favorite recipes.
Common Problems in Zone 7A (Pacific Northwest)
Sage is generally trouble-free, but here are a few common problems to watch out for in the Pacific Northwest:
Powdery Mildew
- What it looks like: A white or grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. Leaves may curl, yellow, and die.
- What causes it: Various fungi thrive in warm days, cool nights, and moderate humidity. Dry leaf surfaces actually favor it (unlike most fungi). Our region's cool nights and moderate humidity can create ideal conditions.
- How to fix/prevent it: Improve air circulation by spacing plants properly and pruning. Remove affected leaves promptly. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays can help. A milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) is surprisingly effective.
Root Rot
- What it looks like: Yellowing leaves, wilting, stunted growth, and mushy brown roots.
- What causes it: Overwatering and poorly draining soil. Our wet springs can exacerbate this problem.
- How to fix/prevent it: Plant Sage in well-draining soil. Avoid overwatering, especially during periods of heavy rain. Improve soil drainage by adding compost or other organic matter.
Spider Mites
- What it looks like: Fine stippling on leaves (tiny white dots). Fine webbing on leaf undersides and between stems. Leaves turn bronze or yellow.
- What causes it: Tiny arachnids that thrive in hot, dry conditions. Populations explode in drought stress.
- How to fix/prevent it: A strong water spray (daily for a week) is the best treatment. Increase humidity around plants. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can also help.
Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: Our mild summer heat and dry-summer humidity generally benefit Sage, but our wet springs can create conditions favorable for root rot. Be sure to plant in well-draining soil and avoid overwatering, especially during the spring months. While late blight is a concern for other plants in the region, it doesn't typically affect Sage.
