Starting Seeds Indoors

Keep seed trays warm (75-80Β°F) and use bottom watering to prevent damping-off. Squash seeds are large and easy to handle, so you can plant them pointy-end down about half an inch deep. Our late springs mean you'll need grow lights or a very sunny window to prevent leggy seedlings.

Watering Squash in Zone 4B (Northeast)

Check soil moisture with the finger test: stick your finger 2 inches into soil near the base of plants.

Test for ripeness by pressing your fingernail into the shell β mature squash resists denting. The stem should look dry and corky, and the ground spot (where the fruit touches soil) changes from white to creamy yellow. Always leave a 2-inch stem attached when harvesting to prevent rot during storage.
Cut rather than pull fruits from the vine using clean pruners or a sharp knife. Handle carefully since bruised squash won't store well through our long winters. Harvest all remaining fruits before hard frost, even if slightly underripe β they'll continue to harden in storage.
As late September approaches and frost threatens, prioritize harvesting larger fruits first. Smaller ones can sometimes take a light frost, but don't push your luck with your main harvest.
Common Problems in Zone 4B (Northeast)
Squash Vine Borers These show up as sudden wilting of entire vines or sections, even when soil is moist. Look for small piles of sawdust-like material at the base of stems β that's frass from the white grubs tunneling inside. You might actually see the fat larvae if you slice open affected stems.
Adult clearwing moths lay eggs at stem bases in early summer, taking advantage of our moderate temperatures. The larvae bore through stems, cutting off water flow to the rest of the plant. Try wrapping stem bases with aluminum foil or row cover fabric. If caught early, you can inject Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) directly into stems. Butternut squash shows more resistance than summer varieties.
Powdery Mildew This fungal disease appears as white or gray powdery coating on leaves, starting on older foliage and spreading upward. Leaves eventually curl, yellow, and die back. Our cool nights and moderate humidity create perfect conditions, especially when combined with warm days.
Unlike most fungi, powdery mildew actually prefers dry leaf surfaces, making overhead watering less of a concern. Improve air circulation by spacing plants properly and removing lower leaves as plants mature. Neem oil helps, but milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) works surprisingly well and is gentler on beneficial insects.
Squash Bugs These gray-brown, shield-shaped insects cluster on leaf undersides, especially along main veins. They lay bronze-colored egg clusters that look like little coins glued to leaves. Feeding damage causes leaves to wilt and turn brown and crispy at the edges.
Adults overwinter in garden debris and emerge when our soil warms in late spring. Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters whenever you spot them. Set board traps around plants β adults hide underneath at night, and you can flip boards in the morning to destroy them. Clean up all plant debris thoroughly in fall to eliminate overwintering sites.
