Beets thrive in our Pacific Northwest climate, making them one of the most reliable root vegetables for Zone 6B gardens. Our mild summers and cool nights create perfect conditions for developing sweet, tender roots without the stress that hot climates can cause. You'll get both delicious roots and nutritious greens from a single planting, and the earthy flavor that develops in our cool conditions is far superior to anything you'll find in the store.
While our wet springs can delay soil warming and challenge some crops, beets actually handle our cool, overcast spring days quite well once the soil is workable. With our 162-day growing season, you have plenty of time for multiple sowings, and beets will keep producing right through our excellent fall weather until the first frost arrives in early October.
Transplanting Outdoors
Beets transplant poorly due to their sensitive taproot, so transplanting isn't the recommended method for this crop. If you must transplant seedlings (perhaps from an accidental indoor start), handle them during early April through early May when soil has warmed slightly.
Give transplants a full week of hardening off since our spring weather can swing between warm days and surprisingly cool nights. Space them 3-4 inches apart in prepared soil. Be extremely gentle with the roots during planting, as any damage will result in forked or stunted roots.
Expect some transplant shock and potentially poor root development. Direct sowing will always give you better results in our Pacific Northwest conditions.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is absolutely the best method for beets in the Pacific Northwest. Sow from mid-April through early August, giving you multiple harvest windows throughout our growing season. Wait until soil temperature reaches at least 45°F - our cool spring soil can delay germination if you rush this timing.
Prepare your bed with loose, well-draining soil since our wet winters can leave compacted earth. Plant seeds about half an inch deep and 3-4 inches apart. Beet "seeds" are actually clusters that produce multiple seedlings, so you'll need to thin to the strongest plant in each spot once they're about 2 inches tall.
Our mild summer temperatures are perfect for successive plantings every 3 weeks through mid-July. This extends your harvest window and prevents the feast-or-famine cycle that happens with single large plantings.
Watering Beet in Zone 6B (Pacific Northwest)
Beets need consistent moisture throughout their 55-day growing cycle, making them perfect for our rainfall patterns if you time things right. During our dry summer months, provide about 1 inch of water per week to keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. The finger test works well - check 2 inches down to ensure the soil stays consistently damp.
Water at soil level rather than overhead to reduce disease pressure in our humid spring conditions. Irregular watering creates those telltale white rings inside the roots (called zoning), which makes beets tough and less flavorful. This is especially important during root development, which happens over several weeks.
Our spring plantings often get adequate natural rainfall, but summer sowings will need regular irrigation during our typical dry spell from mid-July through September. Morning watering works best so plants can dry before our cool nights arrive.
Apply a light layer of straw mulch around plants to retain moisture and keep soil temperatures even during our occasional hot spells. This helps prevent the soil from drying out too quickly between waterings in our low-humidity summer air.

Harvest Time
Your first beets will be ready for harvest starting mid-June if you planted in mid-April, continuing through mid-October with successive sowings. Look for root tops pushing up through the soil surface - they're ready when the visible portion reaches 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter.
Don't let them get much larger than golf ball size, as oversized beets become woody and lose their tender sweetness. Pull them gently from the soil, twisting slightly if needed. Cut greens off about 2 inches above the root to prevent bleeding, but don't waste them - beet greens are delicious steamed or sautéed.
Harvest what you need rather than pulling entire rows at once. Beets can stay in the ground for several weeks after reaching maturity without significant quality loss, especially in our cool fall weather. As your first frost approaches in early October, harvest any remaining roots and store them in the refrigerator for several weeks.
The final harvest timing is flexible in our region since beets can handle light frost. You might get an extra few weeks of harvest time if fall stays mild, which happens frequently in the Pacific Northwest.

Leaf Miners What it looks like: Squiggly white or brown tunnels running through beet leaves, creating a maze-like pattern. Leaves may look bleached or dried in affected areas. What causes it: Small fly larvae tunnel between leaf surfaces, more common during our warm, dry summer months when these pests are active. How to fix/prevent it: Remove affected leaves immediately and dispose in garbage (not compost). Row covers during egg-laying periods help prevent infestation. The damage is mostly cosmetic - roots develop normally.
Cercospora Leaf Spot What it looks like: Small brown spots with reddish borders on leaves, eventually causing yellowing and leaf drop. Spots may develop gray centers in humid conditions. What causes it: Fungal disease that thrives in our wet spring weather and spreads through water splash from rain or overhead watering. How to fix/prevent it: Water at soil level, provide good air circulation, and avoid working with wet plants. Remove affected leaves promptly. This disease is less problematic during our dry summer months.
Poor Germination What it looks like: Patchy emergence with many gaps in your rows, or seeds that simply don't come up at all. What causes it: Cold, wet soil from our spring conditions, or soil that crusts over during dry spells. Old seed also reduces germination rates significantly. How to fix/prevent it: Wait for soil to warm to 45°F before sowing. Keep soil consistently moist (not wet) until emergence. Cover seeds with fine compost instead of soil to prevent crusting in our low-humidity air.
