Their nutty flavor is a welcome addition to our tables, and roasting them brings out a sweetness that balances perfectly with the savory dishes we love. Plus, there's real satisfaction in harvesting your own sprouts after a touch of frost!
Our humid summers and variable spring weather can present a few challenges, but with a bit of planning and the right timing, you can absolutely enjoy a bountiful Brussels sprouts harvest. Our 208-day growing season gives us plenty of time to get them established.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting Brussels sprouts indoors gives you a head start on our growing season. Aim to sow your seeds from mid February through early March, about six weeks before you plan to transplant them outside. This helps them mature before the worst of our summer heat.
Use seed trays with a good seed-starting mix, and provide consistent warmth and light β a heat mat and grow light work wonders. Bottom watering is key to prevent damping off; set the tray in a shallow dish of water and let the soil soak it up from the bottom. The moderate spring here in the Mid-Atlantic is ideal for getting these seedlings off to a good start.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your Brussels sprouts seedlings outdoors from early to late April, after the danger of a hard frost has passed. Before transplanting, harden them off for about a week by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. This helps them adjust to the sun and wind.
Space your plants 18-24 inches apart to give them room to grow. Keep an eye on the weather forecast; our variable spring can still bring unexpected chills. Covering the young plants with horticultural fleece or cloches can provide extra protection if needed.
Watering Brussels Sprouts in Zone 7A (Mid-Atlantic)
Consistent moisture is crucial for Brussels sprouts to develop those tight, delicious sprouts we all crave. Inconsistent watering, especially during hot spells, can lead to loose, bitter sprouts. Our Mid-Atlantic summers can be humid, but that doesn't always mean the soil is getting enough water.
During the spring and fall, when temperatures are milder and rainfall is more consistent, you might only need to supplement with about 1 inch of water per week. However, during our moderate-to-hot and humid summers, increase that to 1.5-2 inches per week, especially if we're experiencing a dry spell. Use the "finger test" β stick your finger about 2 inches into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can encourage fungal diseases in our humid climate.
Signs of underwatering include wilting leaves and slow growth. Overwatering can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot. A layer of mulch, like straw or shredded leaves, can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, which is especially helpful with our even rainfall.
Supporting Your Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts can grow quite tall, and those stalks can become top-heavy, especially after a good rain or during a windy spell. Providing support is essential to prevent them from toppling over and potentially damaging the developing sprouts.
Staking is the most effective method. Use sturdy stakes β bamboo, metal, or wood β and insert them into the ground near the base of the plant, ideally at transplant time. As the plant grows, gently tie the stalk to the stake with soft twine or plant ties. This will help keep the plant upright and prevent it from snapping in strong winds.
Pruning & Maintaining Brussels Sprouts
Pruning Brussels sprouts is a simple process that can improve the size and quality of your harvest. As the sprouts develop upward along the stalk, remove the yellowing or damaged lower leaves. This improves air circulation and directs the plant's energy towards sprout production.
About 3-4 weeks before your expected harvest, top the plant by cutting off the growing tip. This will further encourage the sprouts to mature and firm up. As our first frost approaches in late October, you can remove any remaining leaves to focus the plant's energy on the sprouts.

Harvest Time
You can expect your first Brussels sprouts harvest from early July through mid August, depending on when you transplanted. The best indicators of ripeness are firm, tight sprouts that are about 1-2 inches in diameter. Start harvesting from the bottom of the stalk upwards, gently twisting or snapping off the sprouts.
Don't be afraid to leave the sprouts on the plant until after our first frost; in fact, a touch of frost actually improves their flavor by converting some of the starches to sugars. Continue harvesting as needed, working your way up the stalk. Even after a light frost in late October, you can extend the harvest by covering the plants with a blanket or horticultural fleece on particularly cold nights.
Common Problems in Zone 7A (Mid-Atlantic)
Here are some common problems you might encounter with Brussels sprouts in the Mid-Atlantic:
Aphids
- What it looks like: Clusters of tiny soft-bodied insects (green, black, or white) on stems and leaf undersides. Sticky honeydew residue. Curled or distorted new growth.
- What causes it: Rapid-reproducing sap-sucking insects. Populations explode in warm weather. Ant colonies may farm them for honeydew.

- How to fix/prevent it: Plant early enough to allow sprouts to mature before the hottest part of summer. Provide consistent watering, especially during dry spells. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.
Clubroot
- What it looks like: Stunted growth, wilting in afternoon heat, yellowing leaves. Roots are swollen, distorted, and club-shaped when dug up.
- What causes it: Soil-borne pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) that persists in soil for 10+ years. Favors acidic, wet soil.
- How to fix/prevent it: Raise soil pH to 7.0-7.2 with lime. Improve drainage. Rotate brassicas on a 7-year cycle. Remove and destroy infected plants (don't compost). Start transplants in sterile mix.

The even rainfall can be a blessing, but it also means you need to monitor soil moisture carefully to avoid overwatering.
