Harden off your transplants for a full week before planting - our Plains weather can shift quickly, and gradual exposure helps them adjust. Set plants 12 inches apart in rows, burying the stem up to the first set of leaves to encourage more tuber development.

Watering Potato in Zone 3B (Great Plains)
Potatoes need moderate, consistent moisture throughout their growing season, which can be tricky with our variable Plains rainfall. They're not drought-tolerant, so you'll need to supplement natural precipitation, especially during our hot summers when temperatures hit 93Β°F regularly.
Aim for about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Use the finger test - stick your finger 2 inches into the soil near the plants. If it feels dry at that depth, it's time to water.
