Transplanting Outdoors
Since potatoes grow from seed potatoes rather than transplants, you won't be moving seedlings outdoors. However, if you're pre-sprouting seed potatoes indoors (which can give you a head start), you can plant these pre-sprouted tubers from late March through mid-April once soil temperatures reach 45Β°F consistently.
Pre-sprouted potatoes need a week of gradual hardening off before planting, just like any other started plant. Place them in a protected spot outdoors during warm afternoons, bringing them in during those typical Plains temperature swings that can drop 30 degrees overnight in early spring.
Space your seed potatoes 12 inches apart in rows, planting them 4 inches deep in our prairie soil. Wind protection is essential during establishment β consider planting near existing garden structures or installing temporary barriers until the plants develop strong root systems.
Direct Sowing
Direct planting is the standard method for growing potatoes in the Great Plains. Plant your seed potatoes from late March through mid-July, depending on when you want to harvest and how many crops you're planning. For spring planting, wait until soil temperature reaches 45Β°F consistently β usually achievable by early April in most Plains areas.
Prepare your prairie soil by working in compost or aged manure, as potatoes need loose, well-draining ground to develop properly. Cut larger seed potatoes into pieces with at least two eyes each, letting them cure for 1-2 days before planting. Plant pieces 4 inches deep and 12 inches apart, with rows spaced 3 feet apart to accommodate hilling.
For summer plantings (excellent for fall storage potatoes), plant by mid-July at the latest to ensure 90 days before your first frost. Summer-planted potatoes often perform better in our climate since they avoid the stress of late spring temperature swings and benefit from consistent soil warmth during establishment.
Watering Potato in Zone 6B (Great Plains)
Potatoes need consistent, moderate moisture throughout the growing season, which can be challenging with our variable Plains rainfall. Aim for about 1 inch of water weekly, either from rain or irrigation, checking soil moisture with the finger test β stick your finger 2 inches deep near the plants, and water if it feels dry at that depth.
The critical watering period is during tuber formation, which begins when plants start flowering. During this stage and for about 6 weeks afterward, maintain even soil moisture but never let the ground become waterlogged. Our hot summers (often reaching 93Β°F) increase water needs, but our low-to-moderate humidity means the soil surface dries quickly even when deeper levels remain moist.

Late Blight Large, irregularly shaped dark green-gray water-soaked spots appear on leaves, with white fuzzy growth on leaf undersides during humid periods.
