Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting squash seeds indoors makes sense when you want a head start on our short growing season, though direct sowing is usually more successful since squash roots dislike transplant shock. If you choose to start indoors, plant seeds from mid-May through early June, about three weeks before your planned transplant date.
Use biodegradable peat pots or large cells to minimize root disturbance, and keep soil temperature around 70-75Β°F for best germination. Bottom watering works well for squash seedlings since it prevents stem rot and keeps those large seed leaves from getting waterlogged. With our late Mountain spring, indoor starting can give you 2-3 extra weeks of growing time.
The main advantage here is protection from our unpredictable late spring weather and the ability to have strong transplants ready as soon as soil warms consistently. Just remember that squash seedlings grow fast and can become rootbound quickly in small containers.
Transplanting Outdoors

Harden off seedlings for a full week before transplanting, gradually exposing them to our intense UV and cool nights. Start with just 2-3 hours of morning sun, then increase exposure daily. Space transplants 4-6 feet apart β this seems excessive, but squash vines sprawl extensively and need room for good air circulation in our low-humidity climate.
Choose your sunniest, most protected spot since squash needs all the heat it can get at our altitude. A south-facing slope or area near a warm building works well. Be prepared to protect transplants with row cover if temperatures threaten to drop below 45Β°F, which can still happen into late June some years.
Watering Squash in Zone 3A (Mountain West)

Harvest Time
Your first winter squash should be ready for harvest in early September, right around our typical first frost date. The key is watching for a hard shell that resists denting when you press it with your fingernail, plus a stem that's dried and turned corky brown. Always leave about 2 inches of stem attached when cutting β this helps prevent rot during storage.
Unlike summer squash, winter squash won't ripen further once picked, so resist harvesting too early even if frost threatens. A light frost actually won't hurt mature squash, though it will kill the vines. If a hard freeze is forecast and your squash are close but not quite ready, you can cover them with blankets or harvest slightly immature fruits for immediate use.
Check your squash weekly in late August since they can go from unripe to perfectly mature quickly once cool nights arrive. Properly harvested winter squash should have a dull, not shiny, appearance and make a hollow sound when tapped. Cure them in a warm, sunny spot for a week after harvest to harden the skin for long storage.

Common Problems in Zone 3A (Mountain West)
Squash Vine Borers Look for sudden wilting of entire vines or sections, often accompanied by sawdust-like frass at the base of stems. If you slit open affected stems, you'll find fat white grubs tunneling inside. These are larvae of a clearwing moth that lays eggs at the base of squash stems in early summer.
Our cool nights and short season actually help since the moth's flight period is more limited than in warmer climates. Ironically, our low humidity actually favors powdery mildew since it's one of the few fungi that thrives on dry leaf surfaces.
The combination of our warm days and cool nights creates perfect conditions for this disease. Improve air circulation by proper spacing and removing some lower leaves as plants mature. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays help, but a simple milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) is surprisingly effective and safe.
Squash Bugs These gray-brown, shield-shaped insects cluster on leaf undersides and lay bronze egg clusters. They cause wilting leaves that turn brown and crispy as the bugs inject toxins while feeding. Adults overwinter in garden debris and emerge in our late spring.
Hand-picking adults and crushing egg clusters is effective in our smaller Mountain gardens. Set board traps at night since adults hide underneath β flip boards in the morning and destroy bugs.
