🌱 Starting Seeds Indoors

Starting squash seeds indoors makes sense if you want to maximize your growing season or if you're in a particularly high-elevation microclimate. Start seeds late April through mid-May, about 3 weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. Use individual peat pots or cells since squash roots don't like transplant disturbance.

📦 Harvest Time

Your first winter squash will be ready early August through late September, depending on variety and planting timing. Look for hard shells that resist denting when you press with a fingernail, and stems that have dried and turned corky. The ground spot where the squash rests should be creamy or light tan rather than white or green.

Harvest before our first frost, which typically arrives late September. Cut stems with pruning shears, leaving a 2-inch handle attached to the fruit. Don't carry squash by the stem—it may break off and create an entry point for rot. Handle carefully since bruised squash won't store well.

Unlike summer squash, winter varieties won't continue ripening once harvested, so timing is important. Our cool nights combined with warm days create ideal conditions. Improve air circulation through proper spacing, remove affected leaves immediately, and try milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) which works surprisingly well. Squash Bugs Look for gray-brown shield-shaped bugs clustering on leaf undersides and bronze egg clusters laid in geometric patterns on leaves.
