Overview
Winter squash varieties thrive in our Pacific Northwest climate, taking full advantage of our 183-day growing season to develop those sweet, dense flavors that make homegrown squash so superior to store-bought. Our mild summers and cool nights actually improve flavor development in squash, while the dry conditions reduce many disease pressures you'd face in more humid regions. From butternuts to delicatas, these storage crops give you months of hearty eating well into winter.
While squash needs warmth to germinate and our cool spring soils can be challenging, the long mild fall gives plants plenty of time to mature properly. With our typically dry summer months, you'll have excellent control over watering, and the moderate temperatures mean less stress on these heat-sensitive vines than gardeners in hotter zones experience.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Starting squash seeds indoors isn't the primary method here in the Pacific Northwest, but it can give you a head start during our slow springs. Start seeds early to late April, about 3 weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. Use individual 4-inch pots since squash roots don't like transplant disturbance.
Keep seeds warm (75-80Β°F) for germination using seed heat mats, and provide good light once they sprout. Bottom watering works well to prevent damping-off issues common during our overcast spring days. The main advantage is getting a jump on our growing season, especially useful for longer-season varieties like buttercup or hubbard squash.
Most gardeners find direct sowing more reliable since squash grows quickly once soil warms up, but indoor starting can work if you want to maximize every day of our growing season.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your indoor-started squash seedlings from early May through early June, once soil has warmed to at least 60Β°F and nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 50Β°F. Our wet springs can delay this timing, so be patient rather than rushing plants into cold, soggy soil.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a week, starting with just an hour outdoors in filtered light and building up to full sun and overnight exposure. Space plants 48-72 inches apart - winter squash vines need room to sprawl, and good air circulation helps prevent powdery mildew in our moderate humidity.
Choose a warm, protected spot for transplants since they'll be more vulnerable than direct-sown plants. A south-facing location near a wall or fence can provide extra warmth during cool spells that are common even into late May.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the preferred method for squash in our region since these plants establish better without transplant shock. Sow seeds from late April through mid-July once soil temperature reaches 60Β°F - use a soil thermometer rather than guessing, as our cool spring soils can fool you.
Prepare planting areas with compost worked into the top 6 inches, creating slight mounds for better drainage during wet weather. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and space hills 48-72 inches apart. You can plant 3-4 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest seedling once they're established.
Summer squash varieties grow remarkably quickly from seed once soil warms up, often catching up to transplanted starts within a few weeks. The extended sowing window through mid-July gives you flexibility for succession plantings or replacing any failed crops.
Watering Squash in Zone 7A (Pacific Northwest)
Squash needs consistent moisture but not soggy conditions, which works perfectly with our Pacific Northwest growing pattern. During establishment, water deeply 2-3 times per week, providing about 1-1.5 inches total. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2 inches deep - if it's dry at that level, it's time to water.
Once our dry summer months arrive, adjust to deep watering once or twice weekly depending on plant size and weather. Water at the base of plants rather than overhead to keep leaves dry and reduce powdery mildew risk. Soaker hoses work exceptionally well here since our dry summer air means less concern about humid conditions promoting disease.
As fruits mature and shells begin hardening in late summer, gradually reduce watering frequency. This helps concentrate sugars and improves storage quality. Watch for signs of stress like wilting during the heat of the day (normal) versus staying wilted into evening (needs water).
Apply 2-3 inches of straw mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Our dry summers make organic mulches perfect since they won't create overly moist conditions that can lead to rot issues.

Harvest Time
Your first winter squash harvest typically begins in late July for summer varieties, extending through mid-October for storage types. With 85 days to maturity, squash planted in late April will be ready by mid to late July, while later sowings mature right up until our first frost around mid-October.
Look for a hard shell that resists denting when pressed with your fingernail. The stem should be dry and corky, and the ground spot (where the squash touches soil) should be cream or orange, not white or green. Always leave a 2-inch stem attached when harvesting - this prevents rot from entering the fruit.
Cut rather than pull squash from vines to avoid damaging the plant, especially important if other fruits are still developing. Handle carefully since even small nicks can lead to storage problems. Unlike summer squash, winter squash won't continue ripening once picked, so wait for full maturity.
As first frost approaches in mid-October, harvest all remaining squash regardless of size. A light frost may not damage the fruits directly, but it will kill the vines and stop further development. Cure harvested squash in the sun for a week if weather permits, or in a warm, dry location indoors.
Common Problems in Zone 7A (Pacific Northwest)
Squash Vine Borers show up as sudden wilting of entire vines or sections, often with sawdust-like frass visible at the base of stems. These fat white grubs tunnel through stems after hatching from eggs laid by clearwing moths. Our mild summers actually favor these pests since the adult moths are active longer. Wrap the base of stems with aluminum foil or row cover, and consider planting butternut varieties which show more resistance. If you catch infestations early, you can slit the stem and remove the grub.
Powdery Mildew appears as white or gray powdery coating on leaves, especially problematic during our pattern of warm days and cool nights. Unlike many fungal diseases, this one actually prefers dry leaf surfaces, making it common during our dry summer months. Improve air circulation through proper spacing (don't crowd plants), remove affected leaves promptly, and try the surprising effective milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) applied weekly.
Squash Bugs are gray-brown shield-shaped insects that cluster on leaf undersides, laying bronze egg masses. They inject toxins while feeding, causing leaves to wilt and turn brown. Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters regularly. Set board traps - adults hide under boards overnight, then flip and destroy them in the morning. Clean up all plant debris in fall since adults overwinter in garden refuse.
Pacific Northwest Specific Challenges: Our cool spring soils can delay germination and early growth, while the mild heat means squash may develop more slowly than in hotter climates. However, our dry summers significantly reduce bacterial and fungal disease pressure compared to humid regions. Slugs can be problematic on young seedlings during wet spring weather - use copper barriers or diatomaceous earth around emerging plants.
