Starting Seeds Indoors
Start your tomato seeds indoors during late March through late April, about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. This timing protects your seedlings from our notoriously variable spring weather while giving them the head start they need for maximum production in our relatively short season.
Set up seed trays with quality potting mix in a warm location - tomato seeds germinate best at 70-75Β°F. A heat mat helps maintain consistent soil temperature if your house runs cool. Once seeds sprout, provide bright light from grow lights or a south-facing window. Bottom watering works best for seedlings, keeping the soil evenly moist without disturbing the tiny roots.
As seedlings develop their first true leaves, transplant to individual 3-4 inch pots. This gives them room to develop strong root systems before facing our Plains winds. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy, and maintain temperatures around 65-70Β°F during the day, slightly cooler at night.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your tomato seedlings outdoors from mid-May through mid-June, after soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed. Wait for nighttime temperatures to stay consistently above 50Β°F - tomatoes sulk in cold soil and won't grow well until conditions warm up.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a week by placing them outside for increasing periods, starting with just a few hours in filtered sun and building up to full days. This process helps them adjust to our intense Plains sunshine and persistent winds. Choose a calm day for final transplanting if possible.
Space plants 24-36 inches apart to allow good air circulation - this spacing also gives you room to install support structures and work around mature plants. Plant slightly deeper than they were in their pots, burying about two-thirds of the stem to encourage strong root development. Water thoroughly at planting and consider temporary wind protection with milk jugs or plant protectors for the first week or two.
Watering Tomato in Zone 4B (Great Plains)
Tomatoes have high water needs and aren't drought tolerant, making consistent watering absolutely critical for success in our variable Plains climate. With our hot summers reaching 93Β°F and unpredictable rainfall patterns, you'll need to stay on top of watering from transplant through harvest.
Provide 1-2 inches of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation. In our low-to-moderate humidity, tomatoes lose moisture quickly through their leaves, especially during hot, windy periods. Check soil moisture using the finger test - stick your finger 2 inches deep near the plant base. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water deeply.
Water at the base of plants rather than overhead to keep foliage dry in our conditions. Inconsistent watering causes more problems than anything else - it leads to blossom end rot, fruit cracking, and blossom drop. During hot spells, you may need to water every other day, while cooler periods might require watering twice weekly. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around plants to conserve moisture and reduce the dramatic wet-dry cycles that stress plants.
Watch for signs of water stress: wilting during the hottest part of the day indicates immediate watering needs, while consistently yellowing lower leaves often signals either over or under-watering. During our typical late-summer dry spells, deep weekly watering beats frequent shallow watering every time.
Supporting Your Tomato
Install sturdy support systems at planting time since indeterminate tomato varieties will grow 5-6 feet tall throughout our long, hot summer. Heavy-duty tomato cages or wooden stakes work best, but they must be strong enough to withstand our persistent Plains winds when plants are fully loaded with fruit.
For cages, choose ones that are at least 5 feet tall and made from heavy-gauge wire. Push them 6-8 inches into the soil for stability against wind. However, in our intense Plains sunshine, some gardeners prefer to leave more foliage to protect fruit from sun scald during the hottest periods.
As first frost approaches in early October, remove the growing tips of main stems in late August to early September. This encourages the plant to ripen existing fruit rather than set new flowers that won't have time to mature. Remove any diseased or damaged leaves throughout the season to maintain plant health.

Harvest Time
Expect your first ripe tomatoes from late July through mid-September, depending on variety and when you transplanted. Most tomatoes are ready when they develop full color and give slightly when gently squeezed. They should twist off the vine easily when ripe.
Harvest regularly to encourage continued production - leaving overripe fruit on the plant signals it to slow down. During our hot Plains summers, check plants every 2-3 days since tomatoes can go from perfect to overripe quickly in the heat. Early morning harvest gives you the best flavor and firmest texture.
As first frost approaches in early October, harvest all mature green tomatoes and bring them indoors to ripen. Place them in a single layer in a cool, dark place, checking weekly for ripening. Green tomatoes will continue ripening for several weeks after harvest, extending your season well into fall.
For peak flavor, let tomatoes ripen fully on the vine when possible. However, during extreme heat waves above 95Β°F, harvest slightly early and finish ripening indoors to prevent heat damage and maintain better texture.
Common Problems in Zone 4B (Great Plains)
Blossom End Rot Dark brown or black sunken patches appear on the bottom (blossom end) of tomatoes, making them inedible. This typically affects the first fruits of the season most severely.
This isn't a disease but a calcium deficiency caused by inconsistent watering - our variable Plains rainfall and extreme temperature swings make this especially common here. When soil goes from bone dry to saturated, plants can't absorb calcium properly even if plenty is present in the soil.
Maintain consistent soil moisture through regular watering and heavy mulching. Deep, weekly watering works better than frequent shallow watering. Remove affected fruits immediately to redirect plant energy. Avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, which interferes with calcium uptake.
Early Blight Brown spots with distinctive concentric rings (bullseye pattern) appear on lower leaves first, then spread upward. Leaves yellow and drop, weakening the plant and reducing harvest.
This fungal disease thrives during our hot, humid periods and spreads when soil splashes onto lower leaves during watering or storms. It's more common during years with above-average rainfall.
Remove affected leaves immediately and destroy them (don't compost). Mulch heavily to prevent soil splash, and always water at the base rather than overhead. Improve air circulation through proper spacing and pruning. Apply copper fungicide early in the season if this has been a recurring problem.
Hornworms Large sections of leaves disappear overnight, often leaving just stems. You'll find large green caterpillars up to 4 inches long with white diagonal stripes, plus dark droppings on leaves below damaged areas.

Handpick hornworms in early morning or evening when they're most active - they don't bite. Apply Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) spray for organic control. If you find hornworms covered with small white cocoons, leave them alone - these are beneficial parasitic wasps that will kill the hornworm and provide natural pest control.
Cracking Tomato skins split either in concentric circles around the stem or in radial lines from stem to blossom end. Cracked fruits often develop rot at the split.
