Starting Seeds Indoors
Start your tomato seeds indoors during mid-March through early April, about 6 weeks before your planned transplant date. Bottom watering works best—set seed trays in shallow pans of warm water and let the soil draw moisture up naturally, which prevents damping-off disease that kills seedlings.
Your seeds need consistent warmth (70-75°F) and bright light once they sprout. A sunny south window works if you turn the trays daily, but a basic grow light keeps seedlings stockier and stronger. With our variable spring weather, having plants ready indoors gives you flexibility to wait for the right transplant window.
Plan for 6-8 weeks total indoor time since tomatoes need this head start to produce well in our growing season. Start checking transplant weather about 4 weeks after germination—you want those outdoor conditions settling into consistency before moving plants outside.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your tomato seedlings outdoors during early May through early June, when nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 50°F and soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Our Plains springs are notorious for temperature swings, so don't rush this timing even if you see a warm spell in April.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a full week, starting with 2-3 hours of morning sun and protected location, increasing exposure daily. Wind protection is essential during this transition—even a temporary windbreak of boards or tarps helps young plants establish without stress.
Space plants 24-36 inches apart to account for our constant Plains wind, which helps with air circulation but can damage crowded plants. Look for stocky transplants with dark green leaves and strong stems. Avoid leggy plants or those already flowering, as they struggle more with transplant shock in our challenging outdoor conditions.
Watering Tomato in Zone 5B (Great Plains)
Tomatoes demand consistent moisture throughout our hot Plains summers, needing about 1-2 inches per week including rainfall. With our variable precipitation patterns—some years giving us 35 inches, others barely 15—you'll be supplementing irrigation most seasons to keep these thirsty plants productive.
Check soil moisture by pushing your finger 2 inches deep near the plant base.
