🌱 Starting Seeds Indoors

Start your tomato seeds indoors during late March through mid-April, about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. Our late spring means indoor starting isn't optional—it's essential for getting mature fruit before our first frost in early October.

Consistent watering is absolutely critical for tomatoes in our dry Mountain climate. Unlike gardeners in humid regions, you'll need to water deeply and regularly since we typically receive only 10-20 inches of annual precipitation. Plan on providing 1-2 inches of water per week through deep, infrequent watering sessions.

Water at the base of plants rather than overhead. 🐛 Common Problems in Zone 6A (Mountain West)

Blossom End Rot Dark, sunken, leathery patches on the bottom of tomatoes, especially first fruits of the season. This isn't a disease—it's a calcium deficiency caused by inconsistent watering, which is common in our dry climate with intense sun and low humidity. Maintain consistent soil moisture through regular deep watering and heavy mulching. Remove affected fruits since they won't recover.

Early Blight Brown spots with concentric rings (bullseye pattern) on lower leaves that spread upward, causing yellowing and leaf drop. This fungal disease spreads through soil splash during watering.
