Overview
Snap peas are a fantastic addition to any Florida garden. Their sweet, crisp pods are delicious raw, stir-fried, or lightly steamed. Plus, they're incredibly rewarding to grow, offering a burst of fresh flavor when many other crops are slowing down.
While our summers are definitely a challenge with the heat and humidity, the timing for snap peas is perfect to take advantage of our long, 303-day growing season. You can plant in fall and enjoy a winter harvest, or plant again in early spring for another round before the summer heat really kicks in.
Transplanting Outdoors
You can transplant snap peas outdoors in Florida from mid January through mid February. This gives them a head start before the warmer weather arrives. Just be sure to harden them off for about a week before transplanting. Gradually expose them to outdoor conditions to prevent shock.
Space your transplants about 3-4 inches apart, providing ample room for growth. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as temperature swings can happen. Cover young transplants if a late cold snap is predicted.
Direct Sowing
Direct sowing is the preferred method for snap peas, and it works well in our Florida climate. You can sow seeds directly into the garden from early January through early October. Soil temperatures should be at least 40Β°F for good germination.
Prepare your soil by loosening it and adding compost. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 3-4 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds germinate, which usually takes about a week. Direct sowing avoids disturbing the roots, leading to stronger plants.
Watering Snap Peas in Zone 8B (Florida)
Watering is crucial for snap peas, especially in Florida's climate. While they're more tolerant of heat than shell peas, they still need consistent moisture to produce plump, sweet pods. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, but adjust based on rainfall and soil conditions.
During our drier fall and winter months, you'll likely need to water a couple of times a week. In the wet-summer months, keep a close eye on the soil moisture. Use the "finger test" β stick your finger about 2 inches deep into the soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage, which can encourage fungal diseases in our humid climate.
Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure your soil drains well. Underwatering results in stunted growth and tough pods. A layer of mulch, like pine straw or wood chips, helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Supporting Your Snap Peas
Snap peas are vining plants and need support to climb. A trellis is the best option, but you can also use chicken wire or even sturdy branches ("pea brush"). Aim for a support that's 4-6 feet tall.
Install the support at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots later. As the plants grow, gently train them to climb the support. They usually grab on their own, but you might need to guide a few tendrils in the right direction.

Harvest Time
You can expect your first harvest of snap peas from early March through late December, about 60 days after planting. The pods are ready to pick when they're plump, crisp, and the peas inside are fully developed. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production.
Gently snap the pods off the vine, being careful not to damage the plant. The younger, more tender pods are the most delicious. Towards the end of the season, as our first frost approaches around mid- December, harvest any remaining pods, even if they're not quite perfect. They can still be used in soups or stir-fries.
Common Problems in Zone 8B (Florida)
Here are some common problems you might encounter with snap peas in Florida:
Powdery Mildew
- What it looks like: White or grayish powdery coating on leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. Leaves curl, yellow, and die.
- What causes it: Various fungi that thrive in warm days, cool nights, and moderate humidity. Dry leaf surfaces actually favor it. Florida's humidity definitely contributes!
- How to fix/prevent it: Improve air circulation through spacing and pruning. Remove affected leaves. Neem oil or potassium bicarbonate sprays help. Milk spray (1 part milk to 9 parts water) is surprisingly effective. Plant resistant varieties.
Pea Aphids
- What it looks like: Small, soft-bodied insects clustered on stems and leaves. They suck plant juices, causing distorted growth and yellowing.
- What causes it: Aphids thrive in warm weather and can multiply rapidly. They're attracted to stressed plants.
- How to fix/prevent it: Blast aphids off with a strong stream of water. Introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can also be effective.
Root Rot
- What it looks like: Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and wilting. Roots are brown and mushy.
- What causes it: Overwatering and poorly draining soil create conditions for fungal pathogens to thrive. Our heavy summer rains can definitely exacerbate this.
- How to fix/prevent it: Improve soil drainage by adding compost and perlite. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering.
Fusarium Wilt
- What it looks like: Wilting on one side of the plant first, then spreading. Yellow leaves starting on one side. Brown streaks in stem when cut open.
- What causes it: Soil-borne fungus (Fusarium oxysporum). Persists in soil for years. Enters through roots. Warm soil temperatures favor it.
- How to fix/prevent it: No cure once infected β remove and destroy the plant. Plant resistant varieties (look for 'F' on seed labels). Rotate crops on a 4-year cycle. Solarize soil in hot zones. Raise soil pH above 6.5.
Florida Specific Challenges: Our hot, humid summers and sandy soil present unique challenges for growing snap peas. The humidity encourages fungal diseases, so good air circulation is essential. Sandy soil drains quickly, so you'll need to water regularly and amend the soil with plenty of organic matter to retain moisture. Nematodes can also be a problem in sandy soil, so consider using nematode-resistant varieties.
