Starting Seeds Indoors
Start your tomato seeds indoors during early April through early May, about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant outdoors. This timing accounts for our late Mountain spring and gives your plants the head start they need for maximum production in our short growing season.
Set up your seeds in quality seed-starting mix in trays or small pots. Tomatoes need warm soil (70-75Β°F) to germinate well, so consider using a heat mat or placing trays on top of your refrigerator. Once sprouted, they need strong light β either a sunny south window or grow lights 2-3 inches above the seedlings for 12-14 hours daily.
Use bottom watering by setting your seed trays in water and letting the soil absorb moisture from below. This prevents damping-off disease and encourages strong root development. Your tomato seedlings will be ready for transplanting when they're 6-8 inches tall with sturdy stems and their first true leaves are well-developed.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your tomato seedlings outdoors from late May through late June, after all danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 50Β°F. In our Mountain climate, this timing ensures your plants won't face the stress of cold shock during those unpredictable late spring temperature swings.
Harden off your seedlings gradually over a full week before transplanting. Start with just 2-3 hours outdoors in filtered light, gradually increasing exposure to our intense Mountain sun and cool nights. This process is crucial at our altitude where UV intensity can quickly damage unprepared plants.
Space your tomatoes 24-36 inches apart to allow for good air circulation in our low-humidity climate. Choose stocky, dark green plants with thick stems rather than tall, leggy seedlings or those already flowering. Plant them deep, burying 2/3 of the stem to encourage a strong root system that can handle our intense sun and occasional wind.
Watering Tomato in Zone 4B (Mountain West)
Consistent watering is absolutely critical for tomato success in our dry Mountain climate. With only 10-20 inches of annual rainfall and low humidity, you'll need to provide most of your tomatoes' water needs through irrigation. Inconsistent watering leads to blossom end rot, fruit cracking, and poor production.
Water deeply 2-3 times per week rather than daily shallow watering, providing about 1-2 inches total per week. Check soil moisture using the finger test β stick your finger 2 inches deep near the plant base. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water. Our sandy, fast-draining Mountain soils mean you'll likely need more frequent watering than gardeners in heavier soils.
Always water at the base of the plant, never overhead. Our low humidity means leaves dry slowly, creating perfect conditions for disease. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses work excellently here. Apply water slowly so it penetrates deeply rather than running off our often-compacted soils.
Mulch heavily around your tomato plants with 3-4 inches of organic material like grass clippings or shredded leaves. Supporting Your Tomato

If using stakes, drive them 2 feet into the ground and tie plants loosely with soft materials like cloth strips or tomato ties every 12-18 inches as they grow.
Train your plants by gently weaving main stems through cage openings or tying them to stakes. Start this training early when stems are flexible. Our intense sunlight helps tomatoes grow vigorously, so check weekly and adjust ties as needed to prevent stems from cutting into the supports.
Pruning & Maintaining Tomato
Remove suckers (shoots growing between main stem and branches) that develop below the first flower cluster throughout the growing season. These lower suckers rob energy from fruit production and can harbor diseases in our humid morning conditions caused by irrigation.
You can also remove upper suckers if you want fewer but larger tomatoes, though this is optional in our climate. Our intense sun and relatively short season favor letting upper suckers develop for maximum harvest. Focus your energy on removing the bottom suckers and any diseased or damaged foliage.

Harvest tomatoes when they're fully colored with slight give when gently squeezed. Ripe tomatoes should twist easily off the vine with minimal pressure. If you need to pull hard, they're not quite ready. Our intense UV can sunscald exposed fruit, so harvest promptly when ripe rather than leaving them on the plant.
Pick tomatoes regularly every 2-3 days during peak season to encourage continued production. Your plants will keep producing new fruit until our first frost hits, typically in mid-September. As harvest continues, your plants may produce smaller tomatoes due to cooling temperatures, but these late-season fruits often have the most concentrated flavor.
When frost threatens, harvest all remaining green tomatoes larger than ping-pong ball size. These will ripen indoors over several weeks when stored in a warm, dark place with good air circulation. Wrap individual green tomatoes in newspaper or place them in cardboard boxes for slower, more controlled ripening.
Common Problems in Zone 4B (Mountain West)
Blossom End Rot Black, sunken leathery patches on the bottom of tomatoes, especially early in the season. This looks like the fruit is rotting from the blossom end upward. The calcium deficiency causing this isn't from lack of calcium in our alkaline Mountain soils, but from inconsistent watering that prevents calcium uptake. Our dry climate makes it easy to let plants get too dry between waterings, then overcompensate with heavy watering. Maintain consistent soil moisture through regular deep watering and heavy mulching. Remove affected fruits promptly.
Early Blight Brown spots with distinctive concentric rings (bullseye pattern) starting on lower leaves and spreading upward. Leaves yellow and drop, reducing plant vigor. This fungal disease thrives when soil splashes onto leaves during watering. Our low humidity actually helps prevent this compared to more humid regions, but it can still occur. Water at soil level, never overhead. Remove affected leaves immediately and destroy them (don't compost). Mulch heavily to prevent soil splash, and space plants adequately for air circulation.
Hornworms Large sections of leaves stripped overnight, often with dark droppings visible below.
