Overview
Growing tomatoes in the Mountain West is one of gardening's most rewarding challenges. Our intense sunlight produces incredibly flavorful fruit with deep, complex tastes that put store-bought tomatoes to shame. The cool nights even during summer concentrate sugars and acids, creating that perfect balance of sweet and tangy that makes a fresh tomato sandwich worth the wait. Plus, our low humidity means fewer disease issues once you get them established.
Our short 163-day growing season and late spring make tomatoes tricky but absolutely doable with the right timing. The key is starting seeds indoors well before our soil warms up and choosing varieties that mature quickly enough for our early October frost. With proper planning, you'll have fresh tomatoes from mid-July through the first hard freeze.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Start your tomato seeds indoors from late March through mid-April, about 6 weeks before you plan to transplant outside. This timing accounts for our late Mountain spring and gives seedlings enough time to develop strong root systems before facing our intense UV and temperature swings.
Set up seed trays with good seed-starting mix and keep them warm—tomatoes need soil temperatures around 70-75°F to germinate well. A heat mat helps significantly in our cool spring homes. Once seeds sprout, they need bright light immediately. A south-facing window works if it's truly sunny most of the day, but grow lights give more consistent results.
Bottom water your seedlings to prevent damping-off disease and encourage strong root development. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. When seedlings develop their second set of true leaves, transplant them into individual 4-inch pots to give roots room to spread before the big move outdoors.
Transplanting Outdoors
Transplant your tomato seedlings outdoors from early May through early June, after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Wait for consistent nighttime temperatures above 50°F—our cold Mountain nights can stunt growth even if days are warm enough.
Harden off seedlings gradually over a week before transplanting. Start with an hour of morning sun, then increase exposure daily until they're outside full-time. This prevents shock from our intense UV and temperature fluctuations. Space plants 24-36 inches apart to allow good air circulation—critical in our low humidity climate where stressed plants are more susceptible to problems.
Choose stocky, dark green seedlings without flowers or fruit already forming. Leggy or already-flowering plants often struggle to establish strong root systems and may never produce well. Plant them slightly deeper than they were in their pots, burying part of the stem to encourage additional root development.
Watering Tomato in Zone 6B (Mountain West)
Tomatoes need consistent, deep watering throughout our dry Mountain growing season. In our 10-20 inch annual rainfall climate, you'll be providing almost all their water needs from transplant through harvest. Plan on 1-2 inches of water per week, applied slowly and deeply to reach the entire root zone.
Water at soil level rather than overhead—our low humidity means wet leaves dry quickly, but ground-level watering is still more efficient and reduces disease risk. Use the finger test: stick your finger 2 inches into the soil near the base of the plant. If it's dry at that depth, it's time to water deeply.
Inconsistent watering is tomatoes' biggest enemy in our climate. Cycles of drought and flooding cause blossom end rot, fruit cracking, and blossom drop. During our peak summer heat in July and August, established plants may need water every 2-3 days. Morning watering is ideal—it gives plants time to absorb moisture before afternoon heat.
Mulch heavily around plants with straw or shredded leaves to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. This is especially important in our intense sun and low humidity conditions. Watch for signs of stress: wilting during the hottest part of the day is normal, but wilting in morning or evening means they need more water.
Supporting Your Tomato
Install cages or stakes at planting time—waiting until plants are larger risks damaging roots and stems. Indeterminate tomatoes can easily reach 6-8 feet tall in our intense Mountain sun, so use sturdy 5-6 foot cages or heavy wooden stakes with strong ties.
Cages work better for most home gardeners because they support the entire plant as it grows. Choose cages with large openings so you can reach inside for harvesting and pruning. If using stakes, tie plants loosely with soft materials like fabric strips or tomato ties, allowing room for stem growth.
Our afternoon thunderstorms and occasional hail make solid support even more critical than in other climates. Check and adjust ties regularly throughout the season as stems thicken and plants get heavier with fruit.
Pruning & Maintaining Tomato
Remove suckers (shoots growing between main stem and branches) below the first flower cluster to direct energy into fruit production rather than excess foliage. These lower suckers rarely produce good fruit and can harbor diseases close to the soil.
For upper suckers, you have choices based on your goals. Remove them all for earlier ripening and larger fruit, or leave some for higher yields of smaller tomatoes. In our short season, many Mountain gardeners prefer removing most suckers to ensure fruit has time to ripen before our early October frost.
As harvest season progresses, remove lower leaves that turn yellow or show disease spots. This improves air circulation and reduces disease pressure. About 4-6 weeks before expected first frost, pinch growing tips to direct plant energy into ripening existing fruit rather than producing new flowers that won't have time to mature.

Expect your first ripe tomatoes from mid-July through early August, depending on variety and when you transplanted. Most varieties take 70-80 days from transplant to first harvest, which works well with our Mountain growing season timeline.
Harvest tomatoes when they're fully colored with slight give when gently squeezed. They should twist easily off the vine with gentle pressure—if you have to tug hard, wait another day or two. Ripe tomatoes have the best flavor and will keep longer than those picked too early.
Check plants daily once fruit starts ripening. Our intense sun can cause sunscald on overripe fruit, and temperature swings can cause cracking if tomatoes sit too long on the vine. Regular harvesting also encourages continued production.
As first frost approaches in early October, harvest all remaining fruit regardless of ripeness. Green tomatoes will ripen indoors if kept in a warm spot out of direct sunlight. Wrap individual green tomatoes in newspaper or place them in paper bags with an apple to speed ripening. This extends your harvest well into fall even after the plants are gone.
Common Problems in Zone 6B (Mountain West)
Blossom End Rot Dark, sunken spots on the bottom end of fruit that look leathery or rotted. Usually affects the first fruits of the season most severely. This isn't a disease—it's a calcium deficiency caused by inconsistent watering. Our dry Mountain climate makes this especially common when irrigation schedules are irregular. Water consistently and deeply, mulch heavily to maintain even soil moisture, and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen which blocks calcium uptake.
Early Blight Brown spots with concentric rings (bullseye pattern) on lower leaves that spread upward, eventually causing leaves to yellow and drop. This fungal disease thrives when soil splashes onto leaves during watering. Remove affected leaves immediately and don't compost them. Water at the base rather than overhead, mulch to prevent soil splash, and ensure good air circulation through proper spacing and pruning.
Hornworms Large sections of leaves stripped overnight, with large green caterpillars (up to 4 inches) featuring white diagonal stripes. Look for dark droppings on leaves below damaged areas. These voracious feeders can defoliate a plant quickly. Handpick them off (they don't bite) or spray with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) for organic control. If you find hornworms covered with white cocoons, leave them alone—those are beneficial parasitic wasps that will kill the pest and reproduce.
Fruit Cracking Splits in tomato skin, either in circles around the stem or radiating outward like spokes. Heavy watering after dry periods causes fruit to absorb water faster than skin can expand. Our irregular summer thunderstorms can trigger this problem. Maintain consistent soil moisture through regular deep watering and heavy mulching. Harvest promptly when ripe, and choose crack-resistant varieties for future seasons.
Mountain West Specific Challenges: Our intense UV can cause sunscald on fruit, especially during heat waves. Our alkaline soil may require sulfur amendments for optimal tomato growth, and sudden hailstorms can damage both plants and fruit. The combination of hot days and cool nights generally works in our favor, but temperature swings can stress plants if they're not well-watered and mulched.
